Middle School Spanish Teacher
Westtown School seeks a Middle School Spanish teacher to begin in August 2025. The Middle School Spanish teacher works as an effective member of the Middle School faculty, a grade-level team, and a 6-12th grade World Language department. Responsibilities will include teaching Intro to Spanish (6th grade), Spanish 1 (7th grade), and Spanish 2 (8th grade), participating as a coach in the co-curricular program, and potentially teaching one Upper School Spanish class.
Westtown School is an independent, Quaker co-educational, pre-K to 12 college preparatory day and boarding school located in suburban West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles from Philadelphia. The Middle School Spanish program serves as both an entry point for new language learners and a developmental next step for Spanish language students from Westtown’s Lower School. The successful candidate will be fluent in Spanish, be familiar with educational technologies, and have experience with and a passion for teaching in the target language.
In addition, the Middle School Spanish teacher is a member of the core Middle School team. Core activities include advising, supervision of study halls and recesses, chaperoning field trips, and related activities that contribute to the Middle School community and the educational experience of our students. The successful candidate will be a motivated educator with strong content knowledge and a keen interest in and enthusiasm for working with Middle School students. The Middle School Spanish teacher will lead or assist one or two seasons of co-curricular sports or activities or as a leader in the after-school program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaches three sections of Middle School Spanish;- Integrates technology to enhance instruction and engagement with students;
- Develops culturally competent and responsive lessons and learning activities that promote problem-solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills while encouraging risk-taking in learning;
- Contributes to building and sustaining an inclusive community and a program that reflects diverse cultures and perspectives;
- Differentiate lessons, where appropriate, to ensure that all students can access the curriculum;
- Adept at using multiple methods of assessment to evaluate student learning;
Actively involves students in the classroom through student-centered lessons, group work, project-based and/or inquiry-based learning;
- Supervise/facilitate divisional duties (e.g., study hall, recess, lunch, arrival/dismissal);
- Communicates effectively with all constituents – students, colleagues, administrators, and parents;
- Enthusiastically seeks out and participates in school-sponsored and self-selected professional development opportunities to grow as an instructional leader and community member.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred;- A minimum of 3 years of relevant classroom teaching experience, preferably working with Middle School students;
- Fluency in Spanish and ability to teach in the target language;
- A collaborative approach to teaching and learning;
- A commitment to meeting the unique academic, social-emotional, and developmental needs of Middle School students;
- Familiarity with Google products and the integration of a learning management system, Canvas, into best teaching practices;
- A demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices;
- A strong character with a team-oriented spirit and the ability to connect meaningfully with students throughout our diverse community;
- A strong affinity for the mission of Westtown School and an appreciation for Quaker values and how these inform community processes (meeting structures, decision-making, student discipline, etc.) and interactions.
