PBS News Student Reporting Labs (SRL) is a hands-on journalism training program that connects young people to real-world experiences and educators to resources and community. SRL is seeking our first Operations & Events Intern to support summer events and general management across the department. The Operations & Events Intern will be an integral part of the SRL team and have opportunities to brainstorm ideas and support department events while developing non-profit operations skills. We are looking for a strong operations or administration-minded intern who brings experience in events, with a preference for applicants passionate about public media and youth voice. Candidates must be active college students.
Primary Responsibilities
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.

Primary Responsibilities
- Supporting SRL’s weeklong, in-person Summer Student Academy for 15-20 high school journalists, including arranging logistics, scheduling, preparation of materials (physical and digital), and other duties as assigned.
- Supporting SRL’s 3-day in-person Teacher Workshop for 40-50 educators, including arranging logistics, scheduling, preparation of materials (physical and digital), and other duties as assigned.
- Supporting preparation and logistics for summer workshops and conferences, including logistics, preparation of materials (physical and digital), and other duties as assigned.
- Supporting the creation of grant reports, including compiling information and data from across the department.
- Creating an executing an operations internship project (with support from the Operations Team).
- Preferred Major: Journalism, media, communications, or related discipline.
- Skill development: Gain practical experience while acquiring knowledge within the field of non-profit administration and operations, as well as event planning and execution
- Understanding real-world application: Develop a greater understanding about what goes on behind the scenes to ensure smooth operations of programs and events
- Personal Professional Development: Grow project management skills and learn new systems while working in a in a professional environment
- Portfolio building: Develop a portfolio of examples of work, including a self-designed operations project
- Experience in working and/or planning in-person events
- Project management experience
- Demonstrated the ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment
- Overall tech savvy skills: you feel comfortable and are open to using Zoom, Google Drive, Slack, AirTable, Canva and other programs
- Great interpersonal and communication skills
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for journalism, youth engagement, and public media
