Our Strategy and Technology organization is looking to hire a Nursery Research Specialist. This position is part of Western Timberlands Strategy and Technology team and reports to the Western Production Forestry Program Manager. This position will be based out of our Centralia Washington facility.
Western Production Forestry is responsible for developing technology that spans the entire life cycle of Douglas-fir from seedlings grown in nurseries to harvest. This role will primarily be focused on nursery and early rotation research with opportunities to contribute to other key projects across the Production Forestry Research portfolio as well as across platforms (i.e., Tree Improvement and Environmental Research) as they arise. The successful candidate will engage in nursery research activities involving seedling quality, seedling survival and growth, and seedling physiology.
Additionally, field research evaluating early stand performance of various stock types and other silviculture treatments will also be a key focal area. Job includes safely executing routine research tasks, ability to lead projects, data QC and analysis, reporting through formal technical writing and/or presentations to key customers, original thinking and solid experimental approaches to solve problems while mentoring others as needed.

- Masters or Bachelor’s (with 2 or more years of experience; MS degree qualifies as 2 years’ experience) in horticulture, precision agriculture, forestry or related field.
- Experience in nursery and greenhouse management.
- Experience growing tree seedling crops containers and bare root systems.
- Ability to identify nursery and seedling pests (insects, diseases, abiotic).
- Excellent working knowledge of MS Office applications.
- Excellent team working skills including fostering strong business relationships with Western Regeneration across all three internal nurseries (Mima and Rochester, Washington and Aurora and Turner, Oregon).
- Remote Sensing and/or UAV experience in precision agriculture systems or nursery settings.
- Strong decision making, leadership, and communication skills.
- Mechanical skills.
- Nursery and greenhouse experience including growth chambers.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring systems and sensors (e.g., Campbell, Meter, Decagon, etc.).
- Herbicide and pesticide application management.
