Whatcom County Public Works Engineering is hiring an Engineering Technician within our Traffic Section team. In this position, you will perform regular traffic counts, conduct analyses for installation of traffic infrastructure improvements, prepare and review intersection evaluation reports, and investigate vehicular collision reports. The Traffic Section is forward facing in the community, working directly with concerned citizens of Whatcom County to develop solutions to transportation-related issues, such as requests for traffic calming, incidents of failure to stop or yield, substandard sight distance and many others.
The Traffic Section also seeks out and obtains Federal, State and local grant funding to support the road and bridge construction program in Whatcom County. Creation of exhibits and maps utilizing AutoCAD and ArcGIS are routine duties of this Traffic Technician position, as well as coordinating with other Public Works Engineering sections, Maintenance & Operations and the Sheriff’s Office.

Requires an Associate’s degree (or higher) in Engineering Technology, or a related field.
Engineering Technician II:
Requires an Associate’s degree (or higher) in Engineering Technology, or a related field AND two years of progressively responsible experience at an Engineering Technician I level.
Engineering Technician III:
Requires an Associate’s degree (or higher) in Engineering Technology, or a related field AND four years of progressively responsible engineering technology experience, INCLUDING two years at an Engineering Technician II level.
Engineering Technician IV:
Requires Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND five years of related, progressively responsible engineering technology experience INCLUDING three years working at an Engineering Technician III level OR Associate's Degree in Engineering Technology or a related field AND seven years of related progressively responsible engineering technology experience INCLUDING three years working at an Engineering Technician III level.
Years of experience required varies, depending on technician level and educational background.
Must have Background Check and Driving Record that meets County Standards.
Requires valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.
Must be eligible to cross between United States and Canada.
