What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Extra Help--Natural Resources Technician position at Whatcom County?
Whatcom County Public Works is hiring a temporary extra help employee to assist Natural Resources programs focusing on water quality, water resources, noxious weeds, marine resources, and salmon recovery. Duties will include a mix of field work, data entry, GIS projects, and other tasks to support Natural Resources programs and projects. Length of Position: This position will be part time about 16 hours/week (maximum 69 hours/month) for most of the year with three months full time at 40 hours per week in the summer/fall. Part time schedule has some flexibility but requires availability to work up to 8 hours per day for 2 days per week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

Qualifications
- Completed college coursework in one or more of the following areas: biology, ecology, environmental science, geology, hydrology, natural resources management, or related fields.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word. Preferred experience with Publisher.
- Preferred experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), databases, and applications handling spatial datasets.
- Preferred experience and/or coursework in conducting biological surveys, water quality sampling, managing noxious weeds, or other field work.
- Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions and near creeks, rivers, marine waters, and lakes.
- Good communication skills and an interest in working with the public.
- Time management skills to support working on multiple projects.
Must be at least 18 years old, have a driving record that meets County standards, and possess a valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment. Background check must meet County criteria.
