What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Extra Help - Strengthening Families Program Facilitator position at Whatcom County?
Whatcom County’s WSU Cooperative Extension Office is hiring certified Strengthening Families Program Facilitators to conduct several seven week Strengthening Families Programs for Parents or Youth ages 10-14 Years, and families.
The Strengthening Families Program is a family skills training intervention designed to enhance school success and reduce youth substance use and aggression among 10-14 year olds. The sessions provide instruction for parents on understanding the risk factors for substance use, enhancing parent-child bonding, monitoring compliance with parental guidelines and imposing appropriate consequences, managing anger and family conflict, and fostering positive child involvement in family tasks.
Facilitators participate in meal time with families, conduct sessions as described in program guidelines and track participant attendance. Facilitators also conduct participant evaluations as directed by County Extension Educator and complete reports as needed. Programs are conducted in both English and Spanish in various school districts in Whatcom County.
Programs will be conducted in the evenings typically at a school site, once a week typically from 5:30 pm -8:00 pm. Facilitators are expected to commit to entire 7 week program. Facilitators are also eligible to participate in more than one program.
- Certification as a Strengthening Families Program Facilitator through WSU.
- Experience working with youth and/or families required.
- Knowledge regarding child development, behavior management and group dynamics.
- Possess a knowledge and understanding of basic parenting skills and family dynamics.
- Ability to be a positive role model to families.
- Ability to facilitate groups of parents and/or children.
- Dependability.
- Work effectively in team environment with positive attitude and collaborate with others;
- Background check must meet County criteria. Required to complete a Disclosure of Crimes Against Children or Vulnerable Adults.
- Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related field preferred
