Job Purpose
The Whatcom Working Waterfront Foundation (a 501c3 nonprofit) is looking for a part-time person to join the Northwest Maritime Apprenticeship training team at our office in Bellingham, WA. The Program Assistant, a part-time, temporary, contracted position, assists in the implementation of the Northwest Maritime Apprenticeship educating professional Marine Service Technicians. This position will support our team of instructors and apprentices across Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Island, and San Juan counties small-craft recreational and commercial service industry.
Responsibilities
The Program Assistant, in collaboration with the Apprenticeship Program Director, will assist with performing the following tasks in these general categories:
- Setting up the classroom and workshop space before the training sessions, setting up the equipment and supplies, signage, facilitation with instructors, etc.
- Attend and facilitate weekly and monthly training sessions.
- Cleaning up and organizing after training sessions.
- Assist in administrative and office tasks.
- Actively promote and raise awareness of Northwest Maritime Apprenticeship’s program.
- Perform any similar related tasks contributing to the success of the Foundation.
Environment/Schedule
The Northwest Maritime Apprenticeship classes run from September-April.
1-2 Evening classes/week – 4-8 p.m.
1-2 Saturday classes/month – 8 a.m.-5p.m.
Administrative, outreach, and other program tasks are available during the summer season.
Expect outdoor work in boatyards, docks, on vessels and conditions typical of marine service work. Indoor workshops may be unheated or have open bay doors, office environments are typically open-concept shared workspaces. Assisting instructors can involve physical activity (lifting/moving/setting up tools and materials).
Qualifications
Required:
- Strong communication skills (interpersonal, oral and written).
- Resourceful, organized, and manages time.
- Ability to work effectively with a team and independently.
- Experience with software applications i.e., Adobe, Zoom, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Salesforce, and various social media platforms.
Preferred:
- Understanding of apprenticeship structures and requirements.
- Familiarity with marine terminology and maritime industry.
- Previous experience with educational program coordination or administration.
Compensation
This is a contracted part-time position with a pay $22/hour. Benefits are not provided. You will be given a 1099 tax form.
This contract position has the potential to transition to a permanent full-time position if funding allows.
