ROLE
WHC Energy Services – A Surerus Murphy Company (WHC), is seeking to recruit a High-Voltage (HV) Substation Foreman. The HV Substation Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating the construction of electrical substations. This position oversees crews to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise and coordinate activities of workers in substation construction.
- Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to ensure proper installation of substation components.
- Must understand how a substation is built from civil foundation, underground conduit and grounding, to steel, buss and switches.
- Plan, schedule, and assign daily tasks to crew members.
- Inspect work to ensure compliance with safety standards and quality specifications.
- Oversee installation of transformers, breakers, switches, bus structures, grounding systems, and control wiring.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to all safety procedures and protocols.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and personnel hours.
- Communicate effectively with project management, engineers, procurement, and other stakeholders.
- Train and mentor crew members on proper procedures and techniques.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in the field as they arise.
Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training or certifications in electrical systems preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in substation construction or maintenance, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory role.
Skills and Knowledge
- Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems used in substations.
- Familiarity with OSHA, NESC, and other relevant safety regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred.
- Ability to travel and work in various locations and in various weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Willingness to work overtime, nights, and weekends as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is field based and often works within remote project locations. Travel and/or living in temporary accommodation is required. Able to work 6 days on, 1 day off shift with 10-hour shifts for the duration of project.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The HV Substation Foreman reports to the Site Manager.
