About the Role
As a Mill Operator at Zekelman Industries, Birmingham, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe and continuous operation of all machinery, monitoring the mill manufacturing process, and troubleshooting equipment to maintain production quality. Shift: 1st (5AM-130PM)
- Ensures the safe and continuous operation of all machinery, promptly reporting unsafe conditions.
- Monitors and controls aspects of the mill manufacturing process, including loading coils, operating equipment, and completing quality control checks throughout production.
- Maintains equipment in proper operating condition, performing necessary adjustments and repairs.
- Conducts size, gauge, grade, and shape changes on the production line for assigned tube and pipe mill.
- Inspects tooling condition at the end of each rolling, communicating the need for reconditioning.
- Troubleshoots and solves problems, effectively communicating issues to crew and supervision to ensure product quality.
- Assists maintenance with simple preventive maintenance tasks such as mill adjustments, fluid checks, minor part replacements, and equipment lubrication.
- Directs and assists in mill changeovers to ensure smooth production transitions.
- Ensures quality requirements are met by mill crew, maintaining offline requirements for quick-change operations.
- Calibrates micrometers at the start of shifts and during changeovers.
- Completes all required paperwork, production records, and inventory management tasks.
- Adheres to company safety policies and regulatory standards.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support production needs.
- High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Technical School Diploma preferred.
- Previous mill operation or machine operator experience strongly preferred.
- Tube mill manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
- Solid mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and use decimals and fractions.
- Strong reasoning ability to identify and solve problems related to equipment or product quality.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with the ability to listen and effectively communicate with coworkers and customers.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to interact with programs to access work order information.
- Experience with measuring devices (tape measures, micrometers, calipers, etc.) preferred.
- Willingness to work overtime and odd hours as needed to address emergencies that affect production or safety.
- Regular, full-time, predictable onsite attendance is required.
