Wheaton College has a mid-level position available for professionals looking to grow operational and residential education skills. Wheaton College is home to six professional staff members that support the housing needs of over 1,700 students, 96% of whom live on campus.

To support and enhance the mission of the Office of Residential Life, the Assistant Director is a full-time role responsible for direction of the theme housing program, oversight of an upper campus residential area, and support for key operational initiatives. This includes the day-to-day management of a residential area with approximately 350 residents and supervision of 14 Resident Advisors.

The Assistant Director position is a Live In position and is provided with a semi furnished apartment, a meal plan, and a designated parking spot. Wheaton is located in a picturesque New England town with easy access to the train providing a 30 min trip into Boston or Providence. The Cape Cod Beaches are also just a 30 min ride from campus. Professional Development funds are also available.

Job Responsibilities
Community Development
  • Serve as the primary contact for the Theme Houses, including coordinating Theme House Resident Recruitment, Selection, and Training, communicating facilities needs, and responding to community issues and concerns such as roommate and community conflicts. .
  • Responsible for community development within one of four residential areas on campus, which include 4-6 residential buildings
  • Advise and Support Theme House Leaders on Educational Programming Efforts by maintaining visibility in the office as well as by attending and facilitating events and programs.
  • Create and support programming that enhances the sense of community and supports the mission of the College.

Operations and Off-Campus Support
  • Utilize Starrez Housing to generate first year, transfer and theme house room assignments
  • Assist the Associate Director of Residential Life to coordinate annual housing selection
  • Manage the status change process for students seeking to commute or live off-campus, and provide support for off-campus and commuter students through proactive outreach.
  • Assist with logistics pertaining to room changes, keys, checkouts, etc.
Supervision responsibilities
  • Supervise one Residential Life Coordinator
  • Supervise student staff members, Resident Advisors and theme house student advisors in your area

Administration
  • Hold office hours that are posted and communicated with supervisor, Resident Advisors, and students.
  • Communicate with physical plant regarding facilities needs in assigned buildings
Student Support
  • Follow-up with residents who may be students of concern, in need of mediation of residential conflicts, and/or are in violation of college policies.
  • Serve as a support and refer students appropriately for personal, emotional, and academic needs.
  • Respond to conduct matters and violations of residence hall and college policies, including both violation adjudications and general follow-up.
Crisis Management
  • Serve as primary college administrator on call as part of the “Tier 1” rotation including responding to campus incidents when on call – which includes 24-hour availability approximately 13 calendar weeks per year.
  • Lead a coordinated response to campus incidents that involve Wheaton students.
  • Collaborate with Campus Safety in their responsibilities with respect to addressing student concerns and advise them on proper protocol.
  • Communicate as necessary with Student Affairs upper-administration staff, and other campus partners
Departmental Support
  • Participate in key campus programs, including, but not limited to – RA Training and In-Services, Theme House Training, RA Selection, Theme House Selection, Hall Opening/Closing, Non-Academic Year Housing, or Room Assignment/Selection.
  • Participate in all required professional staff, training and development.
  • Support College programs and initiatives including New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Weekend, Senior Week, Commencement, and others.
  • Participate in department, division, and campus-wide committees as needed or desired.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate or professional experience with education, training, or counseling.
  • Previous supervision experience
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population of students and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of effective and emerging practices in social justice and ant-racism programming and education.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and a demonstrated understanding of experiences faced by students who are members of historically excluded groups.
  • Mature communication skills and evidence of ability to work effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills related to program development, student development, and working with small or large groups.
  • Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Carry out the tasks as identified as a Title IX Reporter and a Clery Campus Security Authority, and respond and report accordingly.
  • Ability to manage a complex job involving ambiguous tasks, multiple responsibilities, and an irregular and unpredictable schedule.
  • Sense of humor and flexibility.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3 years of professional experience in higher education.
  • Master’s degree in college student personnel administration, higher education administration, or a related area
  • Experience in programming, assessment, and counseling in the context of a small residential college.
  • Experience advising student organizations and working with a student activities program.

Compensation and Benefits

When determining and establishing hiring rates or recruitment ranges for a position, the College considers a number of factors including the budget for the position, the range of the grade, the external market for the position or similar positions, level and scope of responsibilities, required education, skills and relevant experience as well as internal equity. All salary offers must have the prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $58,000 – $60,000.

The salary for this position will be commensurate with the qualifications, education and experience.
