What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cashier position at Wheatsfield Cooperative?
The Cashiers at Wheatsfield Cooperative are responsible for checking out customers and assisting them with their products while helping to maintain a clean and welcoming front end.
Cashiers can be part-time or full-time and report to the Front End Manager.
Responsibilities:
Customer Service:
- Greets customers as they enter the store and at the register, acknowledge presence of customers that are shopping, and recognize them again as they leave the store
- Responds promptly and courteously to all customer questions and complaints, work hard to ensure that the customer feels satisfied after any interactions
- Explains store policies and procedures clearly, completely, and concisely to shoppers
- Calls for an additional cashier to keep customers waiting time to a minimum
- Knows store layout and keeps in touch with the products we carry and refers customers to correct resources when necessary
Cash Register Operation
- Learns cash register procedures to check out customers accurately and efficiently
- Recognizes produce items by name and become familiar with what we have each shift in order to ring up PLUs correctly
- Learns opening and closing procedures for the register as needed for your shifts
- Learns to sign up new members and sell shares efficiently at the register
- Lets appropriate people know of pricing errors, PLU errors, items without prices and bad products being returned
- Verifies drawer totals at the beginning and end of shifts
Cleaning and Stocking
- Keeps cash register area and counters clean and free of clutter
- Keeps bags and other supplies in full supply for customers
- Keeps carts and baskets clean and put away
- Ensure deli seating area is clean and appealing to customers.
- Helps maintain the cleanliness of the front of the store, inside and outside
- Does other cleaning and stocking tasks deemed necessary by the Front End Manager
Other Responsibilities
- Becomes familiar with and able to explain membership simply, efficiently, and completely
- Becomes familiar with the products carried at Wheatsfield and where they are located throughout the store. Gather product information from experienced staff, customers and various reference materials
- Works shifts as assigned, informing the Front End Manager or General Manager of any difficulties in working your assigned shift as soon as possible
- Arrives at work for your shift allowing enough time to clock-in at the assigned time and be on the floor ready to begin your shift
- Adheres to store policy governing the use and payment of house charges
- Attends and participates in mandatory staff and department meetings as scheduled
- Uses store computers for business use only
- Keeps supervisor informed of any problems or ideas
- Helps customers with special and case orders
- Knows and follows store policies and procedures
- Helps with other tasks as deemed necessary by the Front End Manager

Pay: From $13.00 per hour
Expected hours: 15 – 25 per week
