Public Safety Officer Full time/Part time
Job Location: Wheeling University Wheeling, WV
Wheeling University, a vibrant Catholic institution invites applications for the position of Public Safety Officer. Successful candidates must be committed to the academic and athletic success of the student-athlete and be able to support and promote the Universitys Mission. This position is responsible for protecting individuals on campus property and maintaining the security of campus buildings, facilities, parking lots, walkways, and grounds of the University. Is the source of information during and after regular business hours and on weekends when the University is closed. Must be available to work all shifts. This includes weekends, evenings, holidays and special events. Other duties as assigned. Subject to being on-call for work 24/7/365.
Essential Job Functions and Duties
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
· Act as the first responder to all campus emergencies, medical and criminal, that could potentially be hazardous and/or life-threatening.
- Protects students, employees, visitors, and property of the University.
- Being visible; conducting routine and consistent campus patrols during assigned shift.
- Make routine building inspections to assure buildings are locked and there are no maintenance emergencies.
- Searches for unusual activity.
- Responds to calls for assistance; assists ambulance, fire, and police personnel as needed.
- Maintains an accurate duty log sheet and reports.
- Remains current with special notice clipboard and updates.
- Able to learn and operate all Department and University work-related software programs.
- Lock or unlock building doors in a timely manner and as scheduled.
- Issue parking tickets and enforce all parking and traffic rules; Apply parking boots.
- Make maintenance call assessments; electrical panel inspection and shut off; switch and water valve reset when needed.
- Enforce campus policies and procedures as may relate to safety and security concerns.
- Assist Residence and Student Life with enforcement of hall regulations and Code of Conduct Violations.
- Make regular inspection tours of the campus facilities noting unusual occurrences.
- Watch for trespassers, fire, water leaks, or other circumstances which could lead to loss or damage to property and equipment.
- Unlock buildings as scheduled for events and ensures all doors are locked as scheduled.
- Observe and report hazardous conditions to the Director of Public Safety
- Ensure only authorized persons are admitted to the campus while on duty.
- Direct visitors and assists as necessary.
- Monitor parking lots and direct traffic and parking as necessary.
- Enforce campus policies including smoking, alcohol usage, and drug usage.
- Observe weather conditions on campus and report dangerous or unusual weather-related activity to the Director of Public Safety.
- Complete investigations of College violations, including viewing camera footage, talking with witnesses, and writing incident reports.
- Act as a liaison for the University with local law enforcement.
- May be required to perform incidental custodial and maintenance duties as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Obtain knowledge and be versed in current policies, procedures, and strategies of public safety and security.

Qualifications
- Strong written and oral communications and relational skills
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and members of the public.
- Composing and writing reports, forms, and memos.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
Abilities:
- Responsible for being on-call, working odd shifts, possible weekends, and holidays.
- Work independently

- Operate two-way portable radio
- Operate Close Camera Video Systems
- Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting.
- Must regularly stand or walk for extended periods of time.
- Mentally analyze a situation, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure in the area of responsibility.
- Operate side by side and golf cart
Minimal Education Level Required
High School Diploma or GED
Minimum Experience Level Required
One to three months of related experience.
