Position Summary

The primary focus of the role holder is to support the larger, strategic panel proposals, which are often global in nature. You will bring insightful previous experience of professional services pitch processes and use this to influence and motivate partners in their proposal activity. In doing this, you will help to develop and refine best practice and disseminate this globally throughout the firm.

The role reports directly to the Associate Director for Global Proposals and sits within the Strategic Proposals Team.

The role holder will lead in the creation of compelling RFP responses for complex cross-practice, cross-border, high value opportunities for the world's largest financial institutions, sponsors, and corporations, and will also provide strategic input on smaller proposals led by the Practice or Industry BD teams. You will also manage teams through preparation for pitch meetings, coaching for performance, and leading on post-pitch client feedback gathering. When not working on live proposal opportunities, you will support wider initiatives such as management insights and reporting, and improvements to pitch-related content, skills and infrastructure.

To be successful in the role, you will display a real passion for pitching and proposals and will stay abreast of and apply knowledge of trends in pitching relating to both clients and competitors. Strong organizational skills, a proven ability to work to tight deadlines and deliver under pressure, together with excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to create original, client-focused copy are essential.

Duties and Accountabilities

Proposals

  • Leading or supporting as required on significant global panel proposals; providing advice and support on smaller local practice / office proposals led by other members of the Business Development team
  • Driving opportunity evaluation, and tailoring strategies accordingly, including facilitating no go decisions where appropriate
  • Bringing original thought and creativity to pitches, working with partners to formulate a bespoke offer, and creating high quality, original content
  • Ensuring appropriate engagement of key stakeholders across the firm, including BD, Pricing, Innovation, GC's Office, and Knowledge to ensure the client receives the best proposal
  • Leading on the planning and preparation of pitch meeting stage - developing winning tactics and strategy with the team, preparing presentation materials, leveraging wider teams (Central BD, Creative, Technology etc.) as appropriate
  • Following up on results and ensuring appropriate feedback; working with colleagues to conduct pitch feedback reviews with the client and disseminating lessons learned
  • Supporting on post-win implementation through effective handover and kick-off of the client onboarding process

Best practice and proposals infrastructure

  • Taking ownership of and actively championing the proposal process, including proposal evaluation and feedback to instill best practice and drive improvement; adhering to all processes properly, including maintaining appropriate opportunity records and following up on results
  • Being a role model for others to follow; actively developing the pitch-related skills of the wider BD function and central BD team by delegating effectively and providing guidance, coaching, feedback, and training
  • Supporting the Associate Director for Global Proposals on the development and delivery of proposals training, taking the lead on modules as appropriate
  • Preparing reports on RFP activity
  • Ensuring general boilerplate content is current, relevant, and impactful. Knowledge and experience of PitchPerfect or other proposal generator programs is desirable
  • Contribute to departmental and / or global projects or initiatives as required
  • Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a relevant subject
  • APMP or other relevant certification is desirable
  • Extensive demonstrable experience of end-to-end proposal management, supporting and adding value at all stages of the proposal process
  • Proven track record of project managing and coordinating multi-jurisdictional and multi-practice proposals (including panel and project / matter-specific RFPs)
  • Extensive relevant experience within a global professional services firm, preferably within the legal sector
  • Previous client-facing sales or business development experience will be a distinct advantage
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, copywriting skills and strong attention to detail
  • Highly organized, with a proven ability to work to tight deadlines, manage priorities and deliver under pressure
  • Strong project manager, with demonstrably good stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Proven experience of driving forward initiatives to enhance proposals skills and infrastructure, ensuring progress continues while managing live proposals
  • Strong people skills, with a proven ability to influence partners, associates and BD staff at all levels in order to gain buy-in
  • Team player with a sense of humor
  • A proactive and assertive approach - tenacity, commitment, resilience and enthusiasm
  • Excellent presentation skills and comfortable speaking to a range of audiences
  • Good IT skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and CRM applications
  • Prior experience of proposal technologies such as pitch automation systems or microsites is desirable
