Whitestone Associates, Inc., a 100% employee-owned company and leading provider of environmental and geotechnical engineering services throughout the eastern US, is currently recruiting for a Construction Materials Laboratory Manager to join our Buffalo, NY office location. The ideal candidate will have previous experience managing laboratory operations for construction materials and soils testing.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, supervise, and manage all functions related to Whitestone’s regional construction materials laboratory in accordance with standardized testing methodologies, company standards, and client requirements;
- Supervise and conduct laboratory tests for soils including Atterberg limits, gradation analyses, index testing, moisture content testing, standard and modified proctor testing, and permeability testing of various soils;
- Supervise and conduct laboratory tests for concrete including delivery of samples to the laboratory, curing, temperature monitoring, test scheduling, sample preparation, and unconfined compressive strength testing;
- Coordinate with the regional managers, engineers, and project managers to deliver clear and accurate results for multiple projects in an efficient manner that meets project milestones;
- Train and supervise junior level laboratory staff regarding safety, testing methods, data interpretation, and report preparation;
- Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of laboratory testing equipment and adherence to safety procedures;
- Assist with the accreditation and ensure continued compliance with laboratory certifications such as AASHTO, ARML, and CCRL; and
- May be required to perform construction and geotechnical related testing based on workload and staffing.
Requirements:
- Associate’s degree or higher in Materials Engineering, Construction Technology, Civil Engineering, Geology, or Related Engineering Field (preferred);
- 5 years of relevant experience in soils/concrete laboratory, ideally with management responsibilities;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret and analyze data;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment, managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Firm understanding of ASTM standards; and
- Preferred Certifications (One or More/Equivalent):
o Aggregate Testing Technician - Level 1 or 2
o Aggregate/Soils Base Testing Technician
o Concrete Strength Testing Technician
o Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade 1
o Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician - Level 1 or 2
o National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET)
o ICC Soils Special Inspector
o ICC Reinforced Concrete Special Inspector
