PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides the following afternoon/evening services (as defined by state of Georgia service guidelines) for individuals with Addictive Disease: Behavioral Assessment; Service Plan Development; Community Support Services; Individual, Group, Family Counseling/Training, Discharge Planning, Brief Treatment and Brief Intervention Techniques.  This individual works for the Conasauga Community Addiction Recovery Center program under supervision of the Treatment Center administrator.


This position will work up to five (5) days a week in the afternoon/evenings (approx. 10AM to 6PM), hours are flexible depending on client needs.  For questions, please contact the Treatment Center Administrator Jennifer Phillips at (706) 281-4813.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Conduct screening interviews to determine the need for a drug and alcohol assessment and for emergent care services in the specific areas of detoxification, prenatal care, and psychiatric care; make referrals to appropriate health and human services agencies as needed based on the outcome of the screening interview. 
  • Clients include individuals with addictive diseases and their loved ones.
  • Provide clinical consultation to referral resources, Mentors, family members, and others to help support clients in their recovery. 
  • Work closely with clients to engage them in the decision-making process and help them understand the benefits of assessment and accessing the appropriate level of care as indicate.
  • Collect and review referral information upon assignment of clients from the referral source and consult with others as needed to support coordination of services and scheduling of client interviews. 
  • Provides counseling to individuals regarding the use and effects of alcohol and drugs.
  • Provides counseling to pregnant women about the effects of drugs and alcohol on the fetus, as requested.
  • Provide group counseling, as requested.
  • Model and support health and wellness activities and healthy coping skills for clients.
  • Monitor client access to and involvement with treatment and other providers to help address barriers to treatment and the recovery process; follow up with client within seven days of referral to assess process and client’s satisfaction with adjusting to the program.
  • Ensure legislation, standards and guidelines are being followed
  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all clients, conversations and referrals.
  • Provides Community education and support programs, as requested.
  • Access and collects relevant information and resources.
  • Distributes relevant information.
  • Makes visits and presentations to various groups and organizations including school aged children as requested by administration.
  • Access and/or develops promotional materials and information in regards to their program.
  • Assists individuals to identify their need for treatment programs.
  • Assists clients to meet all program requirements.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of treatment programs.
  • Counselor will be familiar with other services and resources in the community and work closely to provide information and support when required.
  • Participate in all assigned meetings, staff development, and training as required 

  • Complete paperwork requirements and maintain quality, up-to-date clinical records, including Outcomes Survey information; enter necessary information into the electronic medical records (EMR) system.
  • Attend professional workshops/conferences to enhance clinical skills in the field and to maintain professional credentials.
  • If client does not keep assessment appointment, follow up by phone, mail or email and offer to reschedule the appointment as per policy.
  • Remain in compliance with internal and external policies, procedures, regulations, and standards, including all of Whitfield County, Conasauga Community Addiction Recovery Center (CCARC) policies & procedures, Quality Assurance Plan, ethical principles, State Licensing standards, County Monitoring requirements, and managed care regulations
  • Operates a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in social work, Counseling, or related field plus one year of clinical experience in an alcohol or other drugs (AOD) or mental health setting preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or related field with two or more years in an AOD or mental health setting. Individual must be either state licensed LCSW, LPC, or LMFT or in the process of obtaining their LCSW, LPC or LMFT and currently in good standing with their LMSW, APC licensure; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Ability to speak/read/write Spanish and English with equal fluency.PERFORMANCE APTITUDES

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization:  Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. 

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning:  Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.

Situational Reasoning:  Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability:  Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.   Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as or rude/irate customers.
