Job Summary
The Major Gifts Engagement Officer is responsible for developing strategies for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors with a focus on gifts of $5,000 or more to support the mission of Whitman-Walker and related special projects. The portfolio principally includes individuals and private foundations.
Responsibilities
- Donor Cultivation & Stewardship: Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with a portfolio of 100-150 major gift donors or prospects, engaging them through personalized outreach, meetings, events, and ongoing stewardship.
- Solicitation & Fundraising Strategy: Create and execute tailored strategies for securing gifts of $5,000 , including face-to-face solicitations and personalized proposals.
- Prospect Research & Portfolio Management: Identify and quantify new major gift prospects, ensuring a strong pipeline for future support. Utilize analytics and data-driven insights to refine prospecting strategies and tailor donor engagement approaches.
- Increasing Donor Contributions: Analyze giving patterns and donor behaviors to identify opportunities for increased contributions from existing major donors. Develop personalized upgrade strategies to inspire greater philanthropic commitments.
- Tracking & Reporting: Maintain accurate donor records, track interactions and progress in the donor database (e.g., Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge), and provide regular updates on goals and achievements. Utilize donor analytics to assess campaign effectiveness and optimize engagement tactics.
- Engagement & Storytelling: Communicate the impact of our mission through compelling storytelling, donor experiences, and exclusive opportunities for involvement.
- Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues, senior leaders, board members, and other key stakeholders to achieve organizational fundraising goals.
- Event Participation: Represent the organization at networking functions, donor appreciation events, and industry conferences to expand donor engagement and visibility.
Knowledge, Skills, and Talents Required
- Understanding of Raiser’s Edge, NXT, Salesforce, or similar donor management databases.
- Development professional with a passion for healthcare, LGBTQ issues, and social justice.
- Natural collaborator and problem solver with the ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Sound judgment and ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential information.
- High degrees of self-motivation, personal discipline, and integrity.
- Demonstrated knowledge of practices, policies, and procedures related to development and fundraising, including specific knowledge of the laws and regulations governing these areas.
- Sensitivity to all areas of diversity, including HIV status, race, ethnicity, ability, age, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience. 3 to 5 years of experience in donor relations, development, and fundraising or similar sales and client services.
