Food Service Worker - Palisades School Nutrition

These positions are district positions and are responsible for making and serving nutritious delicious meals to students.

• Must willingly perform any and all tasks deemed necessary by the Director of Food

Services (or his/her designee), to facilitate the provision of meals to students pursuant to
the regulations of the National School Lunch Program and/or its associated programs.
These tasks include, but are not limited to, food preparation, food service at meal times,
encouragement toward healthy eating, and clean up of any equipment and kitchen areas
related to the preparation, serving and consumption of school meals, including floors and
walls.

• In addition to the above duties, a food handler may be directed by the Cafeteria Crew

Chief to perform tasks related to Food Service vending operations and/or Special Events
catered by the Food Service department.

• A food handler must maintain good health and hygiene at all times so as to protect all

program participants from contamination of any type.

• Have knowledge of kitchen methods, materials and equipment.
• Have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Have the physical strength and dexterity to complete assigned tasks.
• Relates well to co-workers, the public and children

• Perform routine kitchen tasks and operate kitchen equipment effectively.
• Report safety and health problems.
• Dress in an appropriate manner. A food service uniform, pants suit, or casual slack/skirt

and tasteful shirt is acceptable attire. Tight, form-fitting styles will not be tolerated. An
apron or smock may be worn, if desired. During the hotter months of September, May
and June shorts may be worn but must be of walking style, no shorter than two inches
above the knee and may not have a cut-off or frayed hemline. Faded or worn denim,
sweatshirt cloth, spandex and clinging cotton knit are not acceptable fabrics. Tank tops,
halters, sleeveless tops and t-shirts (other than t-shirts designed for food service or
Palisades school spirit) are not acceptable. All clothing should be clean, neat and
unwrinkled.
Shoes must be sensible and sturdy. No open toed, sling back or clog styles are to be

worn. Heels higher than 2” are strongly discouraged.
Jewelry should be limited to a wedding ring, watch and earrings, if desired. Rings
containing stones that may separate from the setting and dangling style earrings
should be avoided.

• It will be the responsibility of the crew chief to determine the appropriateness of

employee attire. Anyone reporting to work in unacceptable attire will be told to go home
to change into appropriate clothing. The time spent away from work while this is
accomplished will be deducted from the employee's payable hours worked and mileage
will not be reimbursed. If there is a question as to the crew chief's judgment in such a
situation, the food service director will be notified and will make the final decision.

• Employees should report on time on any day the Superintendent has determined to be a

day that school is in session and meals are to be served, regardless of weather conditions
or delayed starting times.

• Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by the crew chief regardless of seniority.
• When offered, attend training sessions relating to food service.

Requirements:

• In the work day, employee is required to sit, stand and walk throughout the day.
• On the job, employee may be required to bend/stoop, reach above shoulder level, balance,

and push/pull.

• On the job, employee may be required to climb, kneel, squat or crouch occasionally.
• During the work day, the employee may be required to lift or carry 5 to 25 lbs.
• On the job, employee will be required to use his/her hands for simple grasping, firm

grasping and fine manipulation.

• The job may require precise manual dexterity and exposure to changes in temperature.
• An employee should seek additional assistance if necessary for any physical act above

and beyond these above listed requirements.
Sensory Requirements:

• Visual acuity to read correspondence, computer screen, etc.
• Auditory acuity to be able to use telephone and converse
• Ability to speak clearly and distinctly

Work Environment:

• Kitchen setting, classroom, gym, cafeteria, may be some outdoors.
