Job Description / Essential Elements : PrintDEFINITIONUnder supervision and direction, provides specialized physical health care procedures for severely disabled students, assists nursing personnel in managing the physical health conditions of students, and maintains student health records. Performs related duties as required.ESSENTIAL DUTIESThe position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties :

  • Administers insulin or assists in the administration of insulin to diabetic students, including assisting with carbohydrate counting, the calculation of proper insulin dosages, and insuring proper administration techniques.
  • Monitors blood glucose levels or supervises such monitoring for diabetic students.
  • Appropriate administration of rectal diastat.
  • Assists in the administration of other medications to students as prescribed.
  • Under the direction of the school nurse, collaborates with teachers, parents, and physicians concerning side effects and adjustments to medications; obtains physicians' orders for medication needed at school and requests refills.
  • Under supervision, provides students with standardized information in areas related to hygiene, sleep habits, drug and alcohol abuse, fitness and nutrition.
  • As directed by the school nurse, reviews student immunization and health records and assist families to assure compliance with immunization laws.
  • Assists in maintaining daily logs and medical records.
  • Performs specialized physical health care procedures, including but not limited to gastrostomy and nasogastric feedings, toileting, catheterizations, tracheotomy care, suction, ostomy care, diaper changes, nebulizer treatments, glucagon administration, emergency care in an anaphylactic reaction, including administration of the epi-pen, and lifting and positioning physically disabled students, and all other procedures described in "Guidelines and Procedures for Meeting the Specialized Physical Health Care Needs of Pupils."
  • Provides instruction to students regarding health care.
  • Updates credentialed school nurse regarding any changes in a student's condition or changes in the doctor's orders.
  • Initiates emergency procedures as needed, including, but not limited to, administering minor first aid and CPR to students and activating EMS or other follow-up care.
  • Under supervision, provides follow-up for health problems identified during vision, hearing, scoliosis, diabetic, dental and nutritional screenings using standardized information.
  • Monitors inventory of classroom and medical supplies, including first aid kits and nursing informational flyers and forms; assists in ordering, receiving and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of supplies as assigned.
  • Works cooperatively with district nursing and administrative staff and consults with staff regarding health information as needed.
  • Works as the school Health Aide in the absence of a Health Aide.
  • Performs duties at district sites using personal automobile for transportation.OTHER RELATED DUTIES
  • Attends appropriate in-service training, workshops, and meetings, as assigned, to keep informed of current practices and trends in assigned area and to meet new safety and / or technology standards
  • Demonstrates and models safe, prudent work behaviors and practices that result in a safe and healthy environment.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by administration in compliance with Board policies and administrative regulations, the Master Contract, and Federal, State or local regulationsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSTo successfully perform the job, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty.   • High school graduation or GED equivalent
  • Graduation from an accredited Licensed Vocational Nurses Training ProgramLicense and Certificates :
  • Possession of a valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse license
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license (as appropriate to the assignment) and access to reliable insured transportation to and between assigned school sites during the school day
  • Current CPR Certification card and a Red Cross First Aid certificatedExperience :
  • Related health care experience is required
  • Previous experience working with severely handicapped children in a school setting is highly desirableKnowledge of :
  • CPR, first aid, and appropriate activities for the care and disposition of severely handicapped students in a school setting
  • Medication management of children and adolescents
  • Specialized health care procedures and crisis intervention techniques
  • Modern medical terminology, equipment, techniques and methods.
  • Proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
  • Accepted record keeping and reporting methods and strategies.
  • Public health agencies and local health care resources.
  • Accepted safety standards, practices and procedures of the industry, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Cal-OSHA guidelines and requirements, and strategies and practices for work place safety in a health care environment.
  • Child / adolescent development and guidance principles related to disabled and / or at-risk youth, including family and community involvement.
  • Problems and concerns of disabled and / or at-risk students.
  • Safe driving techniques in adverse weather conditions when making home visitations.
  • Safe contact with bodily fluids, blood-born pathogens, and communicable diseases.
  • Technology and computer software applications relative to instruction, administration and education

  • Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Mental acuity of collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone, computer, calculator, and office machines at required speed and accuracy
  • Vision sufficient to read handwritten and printed materials, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
  • Hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold telephone conversations in normal range (approximately 60 decibels)
  • Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distances on the telephone and addressing groups
  • Physical agility to sit, stand, kneel, walk, push / pull, squat, twist, turn bend, stoop, and reach overhead
  • Physical stamina sufficient to lift periodically or carry 40 pounds of materials or supplies, and to lift occasionally 80 or more pounds with assistance
  • Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site) for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, to climb slopes, stairs, and ramps, and to respond to emergency situations
  • Physical strength sufficient to lift periodically or carry 40 pounds of materials or supplies, and to lift occasionally 80 or more pounds with assistance
  • Occasionally push or pull a variety of tools, equipment, or objects weighing 80 or more pounds

  • First Aid and CPR certificates
