Organizational Relationship/
Line of Authority:
Directly Responsible to the Superintendent of Schools and/or her/his designees.
The principal is hired by the Superintendent of Schools as the educational leader and chief resource for the school building. He/she is thoroughly familiar with principles of child, early adolescent, and educational psychology; with the content, scope and sequence of the several disciplines taught in the school, with the instructional materials that are available; and with promising, as well as the proven instructional methods.
Statement of Duties:
- Leads with a strong visible presence communicating positive culture, high expectations, and an excitement for teaching and learning.
- Curates a variety of data sources to improve building climate, student achievement and adult learning.
- Provides for the administration and supervision of all curricular and extra-curricular programs in the school.
- Mold a school based-leadership team to develop and implement a vision that embraces twenty-first century learning.
- Uses evaluation under the Massachusetts Educator Evaluation system to drive improved instruction and student achievement.
- Assumes full administrative responsibilities for the operation, maintenance, and climate of the school.
- Effectively prepares and administers the school budget.
- Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet student needs.
- Monitors the implementation of effective positive behavioral interventions systems and pro-active attendance practices of both students and staff.
- Initiates, designs, and implements programs to meet the specific needs of the school.
- Maintains active relationships with students, staff, and parents.
- Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and non-academic purposes.
- Provides recommendations for the selection, retention, and promotion of personnel assigned to the school.
- Administers all school-site related aspects of negotiated employee contracts.
- Maintains a clean, safe physical plant and environment.
- Plans and supervises an emergency evacuation and preparedness program.
- Completes all mandated state and federal reports.
- Ensures effective public relations.
- Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of state and federal grants and reports.
- Establishes effective communications between the school and central office administration, parents and community.
- Engages family and community within the school culture.
- Oversees the implementation of all standardized testing including training of staff, maintaining accurate and complete records, and the distribution and collection of secure test materials.
- Ensures the vision, mission and school improvement plan drive the school based decisions.
- Leads in the recruitment, screening, orientation and training of a diverse and qualified team of educators and support staff.
- Cultivates leadership in others and has a succession plan in place to meet the needs of the building and contributes to the growth of the district.
- Assumes responsibility for implementing procedures, policies and discipline as stated in the Student Handbook.
- Bilingual preferred.
- Works the necessary hours to meet the needs of the building.
- Assumes responsibility for any other duties as indicated by the Superintendent of Schools or her/his designee and policies of the School Committee.
Qualifications:
- Licensed as a School Principal in Massachusetts, 5-8 REQUIRED.
- Can demonstrate a minimum of three (3) years successful experience as a principal, assistant principal, or comparable administrative position, preferably in an urban environment
- Can demonstrate a minimum of five (5) years successful experience as a teacher, preferably in an urban environment
