Summary
Coordinate the movement of livestock from the receiving area to the holding pens. Responsible for unloading trailers, receiving, tattooing, sorting, counting incoming loads of hogs, and preparing receiving documentation. 

Education, Licensure and Experience
Prior livestock experience preferred

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be a minimum of 18 years of age and must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (Please note: This in no way states or implies that these are the only duties you will be required to perform. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position. Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary and appropriate.):

  1. Unload livestock trucks by following unloading procedures. 
  2. Sort hogs according to quality and weight. 
  3. Maintain animal identification by tattooing all hogs. 
  4. Maintain a head count of hogs received. 
  5. Maintain relationship with truckers to ensure livestock is handled properly. 
  6. Input information into the computer system as the hogs are received to allow for pricing and payment to producers. 
  7. Sort and pen livestock. 
  8. Clean pens and alleyways. 
  9. Check all paperwork for accuracy and enter on computer. 
  10. 10.Take care of and account for hogs. 
  11. 11.Follow all animal welfare and handling protocols. 
  12. 12.Follow all safety procedures and protocols. 
  13. 13.Other duties as assigned.

Language Skills
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the language of the majority cultural group in order to communicate effectively. Must be able to hear enough to understand those individuals as well. Must be able to effectively communicate in both individual and group settings. Must be able to present information and respond to questions from individuals and/or groups.

Mathematical Skills
In order to perform duties, must be able to:

  • Count accurately.
  • Add and subtract units of measure such as whole numbers.  

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense and judgment in solving problems and interpreting and understanding instructions furnished in written or oral form. Must be able to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action yet reason when to involve supervisor. 

Other Skills and Abilities

  1. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal with frequent interruptions. 
  2. Ability to function independently given assigned duties. 
  3. Ability to communicate, work, and interact with variety of individuals.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and feet. The employee is frequently required to push/pull; climb; walk; stand; and balance. The employee must frequently lift/carry/move up to 50 pounds. The employee may assist in the moving of non-ambulatory hogs, which weight up to 325 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to odors and warm/cold and/or humid/dry conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually high.
