What are the responsibilities and job description for the Station Manager position at WHUP?
WHUP, an independent nonprofit community radio station in Hillsborough, NC with listenership throughout the region and beyond, is seeking a full-time station manager to move us forward after nine years as an all-volunteer organization. Since going live in 2015, WHUP has established a reputation for unique programming with an emphasis on local music, news and public affairs that reflects our diverse and dynamic community brimming with creative talent and energy. With our first hire we are looking to build the capacity of the organization, further amplify important local and regional voices, and continue spotlighting good works in the area.
Job Description: The station manager will be an innovative and skilled individual with responsibility for multiple aspects of station operations, working closely with the existing volunteer base and the board of directors to identify and implement needed improvements. The position requires a regular onsite presence at the studio but can be combined with some remote work. The manager will report to the board, which will be responsible for communicating goals and priorities to convert to action plans and will provide support whenever possible to ensure the smooth functioning of the station.
Key responsibilities include:
Development: As a listener-supported station in an area crowded with nonprofits, WHUP employs a diversified approach to pay the bills. To that end the station manager will organize biannual spring and fall on-air fundraisers as well as other benefit events; collaborate with the underwriting coordinator to secure station sponsorships; request and renew grants from local agencies and foundations; and manage and initiate relationships with area businesses and event producers. While those are standard revenue streams for noncommercial broadcasters, the station manager will be encouraged to think creatively and collaboratively to design and implement a development plan.
Volunteer management: The station manager will recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to fill important roles including the training and integration of new show hosts. This role in a volunteer-driven organization like WHUP is essential to our success.
Operations: The role requires operational oversight and occasional action that includes monitoring station broadcast services and responding to issues as they arise; maintaining non-IT broadcast equipment and studio premises, ensuring timely payments to licensing agencies, vendors, and others; and maintaining and updating station databases and files including those for volunteers and donors. Additionally, the station manager will file reports with the FCC and other licensing agencies as needed and attend board and team meetings when appropriate.
Communications: As the primary point person for WHUP, the station manager is responsible for tracking the station email inbox and responding to public requests for information and service in a timely manner. Also on the task list: working with the Internal Communications Committee to disseminate information to the volunteers; responding to ad hoc requests from show hosts; coordinating with the webmaster to post news and related content changes; and conducting media outreach.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have:
· A bachelor's degree or two years’ experience in nonprofit management, business administration or a related field.
• Experience in fundraising, volunteer management and/or communications.
· Strong organizational, leadership, critical-thinking, and interpersonal skills.
• A passion for community media, social impact, and cultural diversity.
• Knowledge of radio broadcasting or media management (preferred).
Training: The station manager will initially work with the current volunteer manager to become familiar with our systems, policies, and culture, as well as the various teams that manage station functions including programming, IT, marketing, and communications, with an eye toward learning where additional capacity is needed.
How to Apply: Please submit a resume and cover letter, as well as references, to apply@whupfm.org. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and interviews conducted until the position is filled. We look forward to welcoming a dedicated and innovative station manager to our team!
