Wichita Collegiate School (WCS), a thriving Independent School located in Wichita, KS, will add a K-4 Reading Specialist to our team for the 2025/26 school year. The K-4 Reading Specialist is a member of a collaborative team that ensures early readers meet literacy benchmarks. The K-4 Reading Specialist will work with students to support the development of skills necessary for proficient reading and essential for fostering a joy of reading. The K-4 Reading Specialist will provide targeted intervention to students individually or in small groups using structured literacy methods and research and evidence-aligned materials. The K-4 Reading Specialist is an expert in early reading instruction and will serve as a consultant and advisor for our teachers and community. The K-4 Reading Specialist thrives in a team environment and is driven to help K-4 students achieve success in reading.

The primary responsibilities

  • Apply data gathered through screeners and diagnostics to lead data meetings with teachers, planning research-aligned literacy intervention instruction to meet student needs.
  • Teach targeted literacy intervention to small groups of students daily using research-aligned strategies and resources.
  • Provide teacher professional development in research-aligned instructional methods.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and school leaders to support, supplement, and extend classroom teaching and contribute to the implementation of a high-quality reading program that meets the needs of all students.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with grade-level teams, student support staff, parents, and school leaders.
  • Assist with school-wide reading initiatives in support of families, parent education, and teacher/staff education.
  • Additional responsibilities, as identified, that support the K-4 reading program or enhance the student experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of general classroom experience is essential, and
  • Two years of experience in the application of research and evidence-based best practices in the teaching of reading and
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or Special Education, Master’s degree preferred; and
  • Reading Specialist Endorsement (or pending endorsement) preferred.
