The Wichita Public Library has an immediate part-time opening at the Walters Branch for a Library Assistant I. This branch is located at 4195 E. Harry St. and requires outgoing customer service and excellent multi-tasking skills.
General responsibilities of this position include customer assistance in all aspects of library service in person and by telephone (circulation, reader’s advisory, public computing, and basic reference), branch operations such as cash handling, shelving and shelf-reading, collection maintenance, opening and closing the branch, and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
This position is assigned to the Walters Branch; however, coverage at Alford will be scheduled as needed. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
The employee selected for this position must be able to demonstrate a strong customer service orientation, work successfully as a team member and with off-site supervision, possess excellent Polaris / Leap Circulation and searching skills, and have working knowledge of City and Library policies and procedures. Bilingual abilities are a plus.
The current scheduled hours are a fixed schedule :
- Tuesday : 2 : 45pm-7 : 15pm
- Wed-Thu : 4 : 15pm-7 : 15pm
- Friday : 12 : 30pm-3 : 15pm
- Saturday : 10 : 30am-3 : 15pm
- Sunday & Monday : Days OFF

Performs reference and / or circulation work.Plans, prepares, and presents programs.Assists with maintenance of collection (e.g. pulling holds, shelving, sorting, shelf reading, checking items in and out, etc.).Prepares displays.Provides basic reader's advisory services.In charge of a section or branch library as assigned.Mends and processes materials.Performs clerical work.Assists customers with basic technology needs (e.g. computer, e-reader, and tablet needs).Assists customers with the use of library services.Serves on system-wide committees as assigned.Responsible for opening and / or closing of a section or branch as assigned.Oversees work of volunteers.Dependent upon assignment, position may be required to travel to different work sites throughout the workday. Those positions will require reliable personal transportation.Examples are not intended to be all-inclusive.Other related duties may be assigned as needed.Knowledge of standard library principles, practices, and methods.Knowledge of standard computer keyboard configurations, office software, and Windows environments.Knowledge of entering monetary transactions in a software program.Knowledge of basic reader interest and of book titles and authors.Ability to sort and file items in accordance with established procedures based on alphabetical and / or numeric coding.Knowledge of general reference practices.Ability to manually count back change.Ability to follow simple instructions.Ability to perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy.Ability to push a loaded book cart, weighing up to 250 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, or squat and arrange books on library shelves; use manual office tools and supplies.Ability to develop effective relationships with associates, outside agencies, and the public.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and / or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.Required Experience and Training
High School diploma.Two years of customer service experience including handling queries and providing assistance both over the phone and in person.Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.Attainment of passing scores on pre-employment tests.Preferred Experience and Training
Two years of library experience including shelving, sorting, technology skills, customer service, and use of an integrated library system.Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
