HOURS
Ten-month position, 190 contract days
Contract Unit: This position is part of the Unit I bargaining unit for teachers.
FLSA: Exempt
QUALIFICATIONS
Eligibility for the Maryland State Department of Education certificate in School Counseling.
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in School Counseling.
Thorough knowledge of district policies and procedures and high school curriculum requirements.
Understanding of adolescent developmental stages and college readiness preparation.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present effectively to both large and small groups.
Expertise in college admissions requirements, scholarship opportunities, and financial aid processes, including FAFSA.
Familiarity with college and career readiness programs such as SchooLinks or similar platforms preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn internet-based counseling programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide comprehensive college counseling services to students, guiding them through the college application, scholarship, and financial aid processes.
Develop and implement an objective-based college counseling program that includes career development activities and college planning.
Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to support students in college and career decision-making.
Teach classroom-based college and career readiness lessons using SchooLinks or similar programs.
Counsel students identified by staff, parents, or self-referred regarding college preparation, academic concerns, and social/emotional adjustments.
Organize and lead workshops on college admissions, standardized testing, and financial aid for students and parents.
Assist students in researching and applying for scholarships and financial aid opportunities.
Facilitate college visits, career fairs, and networking opportunities with college representatives.
Assist students with course selection to ensure they meet high school graduation and college admission requirements.
Maintain accurate student records, including transcripts and college application progress.
Interpret and communicate standardized test scores to students and parents to assist in college planning.
Collaborate with school staff, parents, and outside agencies to support student success.
Participate in school counseling team meetings and contribute to the overall school program through planning and support services.
Attend faculty meetings, PTA meetings, parent conferences, and other related events as needed.
Responsible for collaborating regularly with Attendance Support Teams, analyzing student attendance data, developing and monitoring attendance intervention plans, and implementing strategies to improve overall school attendance.
Ability to adjust work hours as needed, including evenings, to support college application and FAFSA engagement events, and other related activities.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
