What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Accountant position at Widewail?
Why We Need You - The Mission:
At Widewail, we’re laser-focused on building trust between local businesses and the
communities they serve. Widewail develops software and delivers services primarily to the
North American auto and property management industries. To help us accomplish our objective
to build the most trustworthy reputation management software and services company in our
markets, we are currently searching for a strong accountant to maintain and ultimately build up
and scale the accounting foundation at Widewail.
The senior accountant will be the first accounting hire on a small-but-mighty back-office team
that will scale over the next few years as the business grows. We need you to establish and
build upon the financial backbone of the business, implementing process improvements for an
effective and efficient close, and, eventually, a move to a more scalable G/L system (from
Quickbooks to NetSuite).
As the first accounting hire (taking over the workload of a co-founder), you will be in a highly
visible role that works closely with the VP of Finance. We expect you to be the accounting
backbone of the organization and be the VP of Finance’s highly trustworthy right-hand.
Over the past three years, Widewail has delivered 50% annual growth and 120% net revenue
retention while operating profitably. The company was bootstrapped by visionary industry
veterans and recently partnered with ParkerGale Capital to fuel its next growth phase. Based in
Burlington, Vermont, the company has built an enviable culture based on passion, focus,
execution, collaboration, innovation, and transparency. We’re excited to talk with you about the position.
What You’ll Accomplish - Your Performance Objectives:
In your first 6 weeks, you will:
- Meet with the co-founder, fractional CFO and the VP of Finance to learn about the business and the state of the function and develop working norms. It sounds simple, but we believe that a great accountant will reap the benefits of getting to know the core business and how it operates.
- Learn the basics around Widewail’s accounting operations and the financial close process.
- Review the company’s documented accounting policies and assist with mapping of current process workflows.
- Connect with members of our Sales, Customer Success, Marketing, Product, Finance and Technology teams to understand our offerings and why our customers value them.
In your first 3 months, you will:
- Assist with Month-End Close. Prepare journal entries and analysis associated with the monthly and annual close.
- Gain an understanding of the customer base and nuances around invoicing.
- Reconcile assigned accounts by the required deadline and maintain appropriate documentation to pass an audit with flying colors.
- Document and help design order-to-cash workflows.
- Review and build an understanding of the chart of accounts.
- Flex into understanding the crossover between sales and accounting/finance by reviewing sales agreements and supporting revenue accounting conclusions.
Within 6 months, you will:
- Assess the state of “what is” in terms of accounting policies and process workflows with the VP of Finance and suggest and implement new ways to update and improve them.
- Analyze and develop meaningful financial reports with guidance from the VP of Finance.
- Work on special projects as they come up with the VP of Finance.
Within 12 months, you will:
- Assist the VP of Finance in leading Widewail through their first successful audit with no significant findings or adjustments.
- Be a key contributor to a successful budget process by providing departmental budgets to leaders for which they can manage to and track their performance against.
On an ongoing basis, you will:
- Maintain and update accounting records and files
- Analyze budgets and create expense reports
- Post transactions and categorize records in the general ledger
- Conduct month-end and year-end closures
- Prepare documents for audits
- Apply new accounting policies and ensure compliance with rules and regulations
- Report to the VP of Finance and work to improve financial processes
