Survey Intern
Wightman has spent the past 79 years providing the level of services that has earned the trust of our clients and helped us to become a well-respected engineering, surveying and architectural firm in the Great Lakes Region with offices in Michigan and Indiana. Including Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo, Allegan, Hastings, Royal Oak, Southgate and South Haven Michigan and South Bend, Plymouth, Portage and Fort Wayne Indiana. Our surveying experience encompasses a broad range of projects.
Summary:
Internships are provided to students looking for career opportunities or are actively enrolled in a higher education program to gain professional experience in the Surveying Department at Wightman. This real work experience allows for a valuable understanding of the surveying profession.
Essential Field Functions:
- Collect field data using state-of-the-art surveying equipment to report information back to surveyors and other Wightman professionals
- Collect other information needed to carry out new surveys using source maps, previous survey data, photographs, computer records and other relevant information
- Assist in the layout of roads, bridges, buildings, water mains, power lines and other utilities
- Set up, adjust and operate surveying equipment and instruments
- Assist in conducting surveys to determine location of parcel lines, natural features and man-made structures on the surface, underground and underwater
- Maintain equipment and vehicles
- Measure, record and calculate data based on instrument readings
- Lay out, locate and recover markings, stakes, and other such signifiers at work locations
- Help create drawings and computer images of project locations
- Perform manual labor such as bending, digging with a hand shovel, cutting brush for lines, carrying equipment, stakes, rebar and other items that may be heavy (between 5 and up to 50 lbs.) daily

Organizational Relationships:
- Reports directly to Crew Chief
- Assigned to a professional mentor within the Survey team
Required Education/Experience:
- Valid Driver’s license
- High school diploma or equivalent
Travel:
- Local/regional travel
- Position based in South Bend
