School Nurse
Reports to:Superintendent or Assigned Administrator
QUALIFICATIONS
- Criminal history check and fingerprinting as required by the school district.
- Certified as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse by the State of Idaho.
- Idaho Pupil Personnel Certificate.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.
- CPR/BLS current
- Bilingual preferred
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Presents a positive attitude through appearance, personal habits and punctuality.
- Communicates and works cooperatively with other members of the staff and public.
- Plans school health programs in cooperation with medical authority and administrative personnel.
- Evaluates health status of pupils.
- Instructs in subjects such as good health habits and hygiene and establishes health policies to meet emergencies.
- Cooperates in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of children.
- Administer immunizations, fluoride treatment and maintain health records of students.
- Consults and guides office staff to provide first aid, determine the degree of illness, and administer medications.
- Be an advocate for students and staff’s wellbeing when needed
- Counsels students in good health habits.
- Serve as a member of the Child Study Team in the evaluation and placement of exceptional children, when requested, advising on health-related areas.
- Administer first aid in accordance with established procedures.
- Assumes authority in the absence of a physician for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
- Transport ill students home when parent is unable to pick them up.
- Conducts home visits as necessary and when requested.
- Communicates with personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.
- Monitor all prescribed medications that are to be given in school and provide proper staff training
- Collects data and information as required by the school district, state, and federal government and submits data and information following timelines required by all entities.
- Maintain up-to-date health records on all students.
- Advises personnel on the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases in coordination with the Local Health Department.
- Annually conducts health screenings at grade levels, collaborating with other agencies.
- Conduct health in-service programs for staff and students.
- Coordinate resources to come to school, for example, flu vaccine clinics for students and staff, dental services, vision and hearing screenings.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional growth programs.
- Coordinate CPR training for staff members.
- Maintains confidentiality in all matters following HIPPA and FERPA guidelines
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Timeliness
- Turns in time sheets to the superintendent each month.
- Returns requested information by the date and time specified.
- Attend all meetings as required, arrive promptly, and remain throughout the meeting.
- Arrives on time and works scheduled hours.
- Completes tasks quickly and efficiently.
- Notify the principal in the event of illness or other reasons for absence.
Physical Requirements: In a 6-hour day, employee may: stand/walk 24 hours, sit 13 hours, drive 12 hours. Employee may use hands for repetitive single grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation. Employee may need to bend, twist, squat, climb, and reach above shoulders frequently. Employee may need to lift approximately 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds.
Employment Period: May be employed for up to 190 days per year.
