Working at Wildflour Cafe
Working at Wildflour Cafe is hard work, but it’s also fun and rewarding. We are a small team (right now the day-to-day operations are run by the two owners and three part-time employees).
Our primary focus is on delivering HIGH-QUALITY food off a limited menu with frequently rotating specials. We make basically everything from scratch, from our mustard all the way to the sliced ribeye we use for our famous cheesesteaks. And don’t forget our homemade pastries.
New applicants will start by learning the basics (sauces, portion control, salads, basic food handling, etc.) all while learning the menu. After a few days, and successful completion of a menu test, you will move over to the register and become tip eligible.
From there, the opportunities are endless and depend on your attitude, willingness to learn and listen to experienced professionals, and commitment to doing the job right.
Want to learn how to be a barista and make traditional coffee drinks the right way? We can do that.
Want to learn how to decorate cakes? That’s an option.
Want to sling the spatula and make our famous breakfast sammies, also on the table? The sky's the limit.
However, no matter what role you take, we expect everyone to have a working knowledge of every position within the cafe.
Ultimately, we’re looking for someone who shares our passion for quality.
Even if you’ve never worked in a restaurant or cafe before, the right mindset will set you apart and will allow you to learn and develop skills here that you can carry with you to your next job and future endeavors – assuming you don’t want to stay forever ;)
The Details
At the moment, the ability to work weekends is a must. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are our busiest days and we need help, particularly in the morning, on those days. Other shifts are available and more will open up as we move into summer.
Shift meals are provided when working more than four hours at a time. In the beginning, we encourage you to try different menu items so that you can become an expert and assist customers.
Pay is based on experience and attitude. Everyone starts at $15/hour. There is a three-day minimum training period that ends with successful completion of the menu test (we will provide you with the information needed to succeed).
Once training is over, you will become tip eligible. All cash and credit card tips are pooled and distributed by hours worked.
We are a team and often those working during slower times complete the prep work that helps other team members succeed during busier hours..
Pay with tips regularly exceeds $20/hour but will likely increase in the summer and fall.
Base pay can be adjusted for the right person, but everyone still will start at the base rate.
We close for most major holidays (except 4th of July and Memorial Day), so you will have this time to spend with your families.
How to Apply!
Please submit a resume. If you have relevant experience, please highlight it. If you do not, please still include a resume with your prior work experience.
In addition, please submit a cover letter answering the following questions. We are not expecting a novel. One sentence for each is fine, but more is too!
- Have you been into the cafe?
- Why are you applying to this job?
- Where are you coming from and do you have a reliable means of commuting to Lisbon?
- Are you currently employed? If so, do you plan on leaving your current job if hired?
- How many hours per week would you ideally like to work?
- If needed, are you comfortable with early morning shifts? We're talking 5 or 6am…
Thank you again and we look forward to hearing from you!
