Job Description
Title of Position: Wildlife Technician
Reports to: Facility Manager
Status: Seasonal Part or Full Time with the opportunity to become permanent staff

Position Summary:
Wildlife Care Association (WCA) receives several thousand sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals every year. Our patients include songbirds, seabirds, waterfowl, raptors, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. We are looking for a qualified wildlife technician to help with the daily operation of our rehabilitation program. This person is responsible for the intake of wildlife, medical care, husbandry, responding to inquiries and educating members of the public about wildlife-related issues, as well as training and managing facility volunteers and interns.
Qualifications:
Required
- Knowledge of local wildlife and their natural history
- Have at least one year of experience working hands-on with wildlife or domestic animal, either as paid staff, an intern, or a volunteer
- Solid understanding of the possibilities and limitations of wildlife rehabilitation, and the ability to make and implement appropriate euthanasia decisions
- Have a strong interest in and enthusiasm for wildlife, public outreach, and providing medical care
- Be 18 or older
- Able to stand for long periods of time and lift at least 40lbs
- Good communication skills, organizational ability, and attention to detail
- Be able to follow verbal or written directions
- Ability and willingness to work within the guidelines and protocols set by WCA
- Ability to work in groups or independently with little supervision
- Experience with computer programs, such as Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn Wildlife Rehabilitation MD (WRMD) database
Desired (not required)
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate degree in Biology, Animal Science, or a related field.
- Completed at least two semesters of Biology courses
- Tetanus and rabies pre-exposure vaccinations
- Prior volunteer experience with WCA
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Correctly identify incoming animals to ensure proper food, housing, and medical care
- Entering/updating patient records
- Cleaning and labor-intensive duties, such as lifting feed bags, cages, kennels, and cleaning all enclosures
- Handling and restraining wildlife from small songbirds to more difficult animals such as adult mammals and raptors
- Assess and treat all incoming wildlife, designing and documenting individualized rehabilitation plans for each patient, ensuring that patients are moving through the rehabilitation process, and determining release criteria
- Supervise the baby bird nursery and aviaries to ensure proper bird handling, feeding, and medical care
- Calculate dosage and administer medications, provide wound care and management
- Supervise and train new volunteers and interns
- Perform basic diagnostics such as crop swab and fecal analysis
- Practice safe and appropriate animal handling and restraint techniques
- Able to work in a high stress, fast-paced environment
