Title: Head Coach

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Teacher certification as required by the state - Employed certified professional educator within county (regular fulltime or substitute) or authorized individual certified by the WVSSAC if a certified employee is not available.

Knowledgeable in sports regarding rules and regulations of school policy and WVSSAC

Handbook.

 

Immediate Supervisor(s): Principal, Athletic Director, Head Coach

Supervises: Students, Assistant Coaches

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The head coach is responsible for the following:

  1. Leadership and support in area of responsibility.
  2. Establishing and implementing an improvement process for area of responsibility.
  3. Establishing good public and employee relations in area of responsibility.
  4. Maintaining professional work habits.
  5. Maintaining and upgrading his/her professional skills.
  6. Evaluating personnel under his/her supervision.

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

 

The following performance standards related to the responsibilities listed below:

 

  1. Leadership and support in area of responsibility:
  • Be responsible for implementing the entire program and overall supervision of his/her program, including J.V. and 9tb

Grade Complex teams.

  • Direct assignments and duties of assistant coaches working in his/her· sport.
  • Be responsible for keeping practice periods for his/her sport within realistic or predetermined time allotments.
  • Be responsible for the general maintenance and protection of equipment under his/her jurisdiction.
  • Maintain regular contact and communication with the athletic director any information regarding program.
  • Be responsible for a complete inventory, at the end of each season, of the equipment used for his/her sport.
  • Be responsible for keeping records as requested by the athletic director.
  • Be responsible for submitting a requisition of uniforms and equipment for his/her sport.
  • Be responsible for securing all facilities used upon completion of each practice.
  • Be responsible for the preparation of facilities for games and contests.
  • Obtain all athlete physical exam reports subsequent to the start of his/her season.
  • Review the grade point average on each athlete in his/her program each six weeks. Any student below a 2.0 average shall be referred to the athletic director.
  • Be responsible for the actions and conduct of his/her team whenever they are under his/her jurisdiction.
  • Emphasize safety precautions to control injury.
  • Inform his/her team of all school and athletic rules and regulations, with specific emphasis on the Athletic Code of

Conduct, and other athletic department policies.

  • Carry out assigned functions or activities designated by the principal or athletic director.
  • Assist students who wish to further their education and participate in sports.
  1. Establishing and implementing an improvement process for area of responsibility:
  • Complete, at the end of his/her season, a  self-evaluation report evaluating his/her program and  making recommendations for improvements.
  • Implement a good sportsmanship program.
  • Establish a process, for self and assistants, for knowing the rules in the WVSSAC Handbook and at all times abide by them.
  • Implement a general health and welfare program for students in his/her sport and give appropriate attention to athletes who are injured or ill or otherwise incapacitated.  All students will be treated fairly and equitably.
  • Establish guidelines for members of his/her team regarding appropriate dress for trips to other schools.
  • Maintain a safe playing area, showers and locker rooms for student participation.
  • Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner.
  1. Establishing good public and employee relations in area of responsibility:
  • Develop a sound relationship with the school and community.
  • Communicate with the principal concerning departure time for trips that involve loss of school time, and for seeing that the faculty is given adequate and appropriate notice.
  • Implement a home transportation plan for all participants when returning from road trips in late evening hours.
  • Post practice schedules for convenience of athletes and parents.
  • Clarify athlete award policies with athletes.
  • Maintain positive relationship with media and promptly report scores.
  1. Maintaining professional work habits:
  • Be punctual for athletic contests and practice sessions.
  • Demonstrate professional attitude by responding to suggestions and constructive criticism in a positive manner.
  • Work cooperatively with administration and school staff.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.
  • Conduct self and teams in an ethical manner during contests and practice.
  1. Maintaining and upgrading his/her professional skills:
  • Accept and use new rules and regulations regarding his/her sport.
  • Attend the WVSSAC rules clinic.
  • Maintain and upgrade professional skills by involvement in the following: staff development (clinics, etc.), reading professional articles, advanced degrees, research and professional associations.
  1. Evaluating personnel under his/her supervision:
  • Observe, document and assist the Athletic Director in evaluating assistant coaches.
  • Provide recommendations and suggestions for improving coaching instruction.

 

If a coach is to be away from his/her classes for athletic events, it is his/her responsibility to see that the class is covered by a teacher and that a desirable learning situation exists. The principal shall approve the covering teacher and the planned class activity. If a coach is unable to find teachers to cover his/her classes during his/her absence, he/she then is not to leave for that sporting event.

 

Each head coach shall submit an itemized inventory and a requisition list by the dates set forth by the athletic director. There shall be no hazing or initiation practices conducted on athletes or athletic teams.

The head coach of each sport is responsible for the entire program of that sport.

A successful work history and a minimum of three supervisory references required for consideration.
