We are looking for a Spiritual Counselor who has the flexibility to work part-time, 20 hours per week, with the ability to flex up hours occasionally as needed.
Your Impact: Our Spiritual Counselors are responsible for the coordination, planning and provision of spiritual counseling and support to hospice patients /families /caregivers in keeping with their belief systems, either directly or through coordination with other spiritual counselors/clergy. As a core member of the interdisciplinary group, you will act as a liaison between local clergy and hospice interdisciplinary team and provide consultation and training on the spiritual aspects of end-of-life care.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities
We are looking for a Spiritual Counselor who has the flexibility to work part-time, 20 hours per week, with the ability to flex up hours occasionally to cover staff vacations, absences, etc.
· Provides spiritual support to patient/family/caregivers as requested and referred in all settings where hospice provides services.
· Reviews and updates the spiritual plan of care on a routine basis. Regularly reevaluates the patients and family needs and success of interventions, revises the plan of care including other members of the team and the patient and family.
· Completes initial spiritual assessment for each patient upon admission within required timeframes. Documents spiritual assessment and interventions in a timely and accurate fashion in the clinical record.
· May conduct funerals or memorials at request of patient/family.
· Provides counseling to address spiritual pain, confusion and issues of belief as it relates to death and dying.
· Participates in planning and coordinating patient care in collaboration with patient/family and other members of the health care team to maximize patient outcomes and use of resources.
· Assesses the patient/family spiritual support system, interests, activities, fears and concerns. Identifies the needs of the patient and family and shares this information with the interdisciplinary team.
· Collaborates with spiritual colleagues, Medical Director and/or Hospice Physicians as appropriate. Consults with team when community clergy are involved with patient and family
· Serves as a resource for community clergy and lay groups to enhance their knowledge and skills in pastoral care and counseling with terminally ill persons and their families.
· Provides instruction and training on spiritual care to hospice staff and volunteers. May on occasion supervise volunteers.
· Participates in orientation and ongoing in-service education to team members.
Skills Required:
· Demonstrates sound theological and pastoral knowledge and skill base.
· Knows and supports the hospice philosophy. Maintains and upgrades hospice knowledge and theological understanding.
· Ability to function in high stress situations and manage multiple priorities.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with professional groups, community spiritual leaders, volunteers, and the general public.
· Must relate to patient and families in an open, empathetic and supportive manner while maintaining personal and professional boundaries. Demonstrates respect and understanding of theological and moral values contrary to one’s own.
· Must work well in a team environment as well as independently.
· Ability to operate either laptop or desk top computer proficiently. Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to perform complex, written and verbal communication in English, face-to-face and in group settings.
· Must have emotional maturity to cope with the ongoing needs of participating in a hospice program.
· Must have the ability to drive own vehicle frequently and the ability to lift and carry up to 10 lbs.
Education/Certification
· Graduate-level theological degree from a college, university or theological school accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or an equivalent graduate degree that includes theological studies is required.
· Successfully completed four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), or equivalent clinical training and experience.
· Minimum of one year of experience in a health care setting. Hospice experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure
· Must have current Oregon driver’s license, dependable transportation, and proof of current automobile insurance.
