The Preschool Teacher is responsible for the supervision and management of a classroom per the preschool's philosophy, goals, and curricular plan.

The Teacher is responsible for: developing the weekly curriculum, implementing the daily activities including the evaluation of the effectiveness of the daily activities, supervising staff assigned to assist in the classroom, ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the children, maintaining regular communication with parents and guardians, and contributing to the overall effective operation of the preschool program. The Teacher will report to the Director.

Education and Experience

  • Holds a Teacher’s Permit as stipulated in the Child Development Permit matrix, or
  • Holds an Associate degree or higher in early childhood education or child development, or
  • Has 24 units in ECE/CD and qualifies for a Teacher’s Permit with at least two years of experience teaching preschool-aged children.

The position requires that the employee be physically able to perform the job of a Teacher of young children, have a warm and nurturing attitude toward children, be responsible, reliable, and flexible in dealing with staff, program activities, children, and families, and be able to accept supervision in order to improve work performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Professionalism

  • Promotes the Center's philosophy, goals, and policies
  • Supports the Center's code for professional conduct (i.e. appropriate dress, confidentiality, dependability)
  • Exhibits a commitment to children and willingness to participate in all Center activities
  • Attends and actively participates in weekly teacher meetings and in-service staff meetings
  • Furthers his/her own professional and personal development and shares appropriate information gained through attendance at workshops and in professional readings

Curriculum Development

  • Plans effective child-oriented lessons to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and language development needs of each child based on the philosophy and curriculum goals and plan of the center
  • Plans creative, anti-bias, science, and nutritional activities in the weekly curriculum according to the developmental level of the children
  • Plans a well-balanced curriculum that provides large and small group activities, which are both teacher-directed and child-directed and allow children quiet and individual time
  • Develop weekly (and daily) curriculum plans based on the children’s assessment data that facilitate the children’s physical-motor, social-emotional, cognitive, and language development:
  • Maintains a portfolio for each child that includes an assessment of each child’s developmental progress that includes but is not limited to: parent comments and notes, parent/teacher conference forms, teacher’s quips, anecdotes, and summaries, examples/representations of child’s skills, recordings, and conversations
  • Participates in the annual evaluation of the preschool program, including assessment and curriculum development

Classroom Management

  • Maintains a safe, secure, and educational environment that is consistent with the program philosophy providing many learning and creative opportunities for children
  • Ensures that childcare routines are carried out in a manner that is prompt, hygienic, and consistent with good child development principles (diapering, toileting, hand washing, eating, napping, and transitions)
  • Creates a pleasant, attractive, stimulating, and inviting classroom atmosphere in which children feel comfortable and secure
  • Responsible for implementing the classroom program activities by using a variety of teaching techniques and strategies, following the daily schedule, as well as following the interests of the children
  • Ensures the safety of the children through constant supervision, effective arrangement of space, and proper maintenance of equipment
  • Develop routines and procedures that help children function positively in a group situation
  • Establishes routines with smooth transition periods

Guidance and Positive Self-Image

  • Provides age-appropriate classroom limits and expectations for the children
  • Shows respect for cultures by planning and implementing culturally diverse experiences
  • Builds trust and rapport with children and fosters their development of a positive self-concept
  • Encourages independence and models appropriate behaviors and attitudes
  • Provides natural and logical consequences to help direct the children’s behaviors and energies into constructive channels
  • Shows respect for the child, communicating honestly and openly, and considers the needs of the individual child
  • Uses positive speech when stating suggestions or directions
  • Provides positive guidance to help children develop the ability to be self-disciplined

Staffing

  • Works cooperatively and effectively as a member of the preschool staff to ensure continuity of curriculum and a high standard of quality in all classrooms in the center
  • Provides supervision to all staff assigned to the classroom and plans and works with other members of the teaching team in a cooperative effort to produce a sound education program for children
  • Provides aides and assistants with growth opportunities by being a positive role model
  • Participates in staff performance evaluations

Parent and Community Relations

  • Approaches parents regularly in a friendly and respectful manner and encourages the parent’s interest and participation in the classroom
  • Ensures that parents receive adequate information about their child’s experiences at the center through daily contacts, written notes, and regularly scheduled parent conferences
  • Participate in preschool social events and fundraising activities that support the operation of the center
  • Attend and contribute to parent meetings

Auxiliary Services

  • Responsible for the daily health inspections of each child and disbursement of medication
  • Implements nutritional activities for the children’s programs
  • Participates in the regular practice of fire and earthquake drills and other emergency procedures
  • Maintains certification in CPR procedures and first aid
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.98 - $27.83 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
