Position Summary
The Database Administrator/Analyst manages and organizes electronic data according to Institute data administration policies and standards to develop and maintain databases and web interfaces in support of the Institute’s advisory, scientific, educational, and administrative units and ensure that the information needs of Institutional users are met. This position reports to the Senior Database Administrator/Analyst at VIMS/Batten School.
Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Development:
- Database project planning and implementation to include needs-analysis, scope definition, design, and execution plan.
- Deployment of database solutions along with logical infrastructure, including requisite hardware and software.
- Design digital interfaces for users and administrators that optimize business processes.
- Migration of bespoke legacy systems to SQL.
Maintenance:
- Monitor system integrity, including data integrity, security, and performance.
- Apply security policies, standards, and practices at both application and server level.
- Maintain database systems software, including upgrades, patching, performance tuning, disaster recovery and backup.
Coordinated support:
- Provide problem analysis and management, including communication of issues and solutions with team members and appropriate staff.
- Provide system and user support by analyzing, documenting, and tracking reported system problems while providing timely solutions.
- Coordinate with other ITNS staff when necessary to provide solutions for the installation, enhancement, troubleshooting and repair of network assets and resources.
- Provide consulting and training services for other members of the VIMS Community and ITNS Staff as appropriate.
- Provide consultation and industry standard solutions in configuring network systems and applications.
Conditions of Employment
- This position is subject to additional hours beyond the typical workday/week, to include evenings and weekends, in order to meet the business needs of VIMS.
- This position requires administrative access to VIMS’ information systems and/or sensitive data. The incumbent is expected to be aware of and adhere to the Information Security policies of VIMS and William & Mary (W&M)as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws and follow information security best practices applicable to their job area and to pursue information security training and awareness opportunities when possible.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Science or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with advanced relational database administration and management tools.
- Experience developing applications to support and enhance internal business rules, data flow considerations and strategies, and logical structure.
- Experience with security policies, standards, and practices at both an application and server level.
- Able to develop strategic enterprise-level IT solutions using contemporary methodologies with in-depth analysis, attention to detail, and best practices encompassing user acceptance testing, quality assurance, and usability testing.
- Relational database administration and management skills.
- Strong working knowledge of database systems, with the proven ability to maintain database systems software, including upgrades, patching, performance tuning and disaster recovery and backup with the demonstrated ability to administer server platforms hosting database services.
- Working knowledge of security policies, standards, practices at both an application and server level.
- Strong database and application skills with the ability to design and implement database systems and develop applications to support and enhance internal business rules, data flow considerations and strategies, and logical structure.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the demonstrated ability to review, analyze, and evaluate institutional information systems and user needs.
- Strong planning and writing skills with the ability to document requirements, define scope and objectives, with the skill to formulate systems to parallel overall business strategies, and the ability to provide system and user support by analyzing, documenting, and tracking reported system problems while providing timely solutions.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with users across campus as well as work as a cohesive team member.
- Strong forecasting and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities within deadlines including change management and status reporting.
- Ability to prepare technical documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Information Science or related field
- Data Management Certification highly preferred
- PMP Certification
- Experience with Workday ERP
- Familiarity with web design with the ability to update and maintain sites/pages
- Proficient in Quality Assurance (QA)
- High Attention to Detail
- Proficient in Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) including usability testing
- Knowledge of GIS software
- Experience with MS SQL Server, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA), MS Excel, and MS Access
- Substantive in the design and implementation of database systems and associated hardware and software
- Experience in higher-education setting providing IT solutions in a customer service driven environment
- Familiarity with collaboration tools, such as MS Teams, MS SharePoint, MS OneDrive, JavaScript, VBA, HTML, and Application Programmable Interface (API) calls
- Adobe ColdFusion experience
- GIS experience
