Unit Mission Statement
The Global Research Institute (GRI) empowers teams of William & Mary students and faculty to make a difference in the world. We are a multidisciplinary hub that applies scholarly research to real world problems, investing in outstanding student and faculty scholars to catalyze new insights and cultivate the next generation of global leaders. Based in the Office of the Provost, GRI supports a whole of university approach to advance W&M by developing ideas, convening partners, creating and analyzing data, and inventing new methods. The Institute’s approach to incubate and scale and applied research helps researchers push research frontiers and produce insights that matter at W&M and beyond.

Position Summary
The Ignite Global Health Research Lab, based in the Global Research Institute, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to support the development and application of the Surgical Need Index (SNI)—a data-driven tool designed to prioritize pediatric surgical needs in underserved regions. The scholar will be responsible for refining and optimizing the SNI by integrating clinical, economic, and social vulnerability data within a Geographic Information System (GIS)framework. This will involve conducting rigorous quantitative and spatial analyses, enhancing predictive models, and validating findings against existing health metrics to ensure the tool’s effectiveness in guiding resource allocation and policy decisions.
Collaboration will be a key aspect of this role. The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with a multidisciplinary research team to align research efforts with real-world clinical and policy needs.

As a key member of the Ignite Global Health Research Lab, the scholar will co-develop and lead interdisciplinary research projects, contribute to strategic planning, and explore innovative methodologies to strengthen global health initiatives.

In addition to research, the postdoctoral scholar will mentor undergraduate research assistants, equipping them with skills in data analysis, research design, and applied global health methodologies. The scholar will provide guidance on real-world data-driven projects, fostering a collaborative research environment where students can actively contribute to publications and conference presentations.

A critical component of this position involves securing the long-term sustainability of the initiative. The postdoctoral scholar will lead grant-writing efforts, working with faculty and external partners to identify and apply for funding opportunities that support the continued development and impact of the SNI. Additionally, the scholar will receive structured training in grant management, proposal development, and budgeting, preparing them for leadership roles in future research endeavors.

The postdoctoral scholar will also be responsible for publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at global health and academic conferences, and contributing to policy briefs that inform decision-making on pediatric surgical access. Through this role, the scholar will not only expand their own research portfolio but also make a tangible impact on global pediatric surgical care, shaping a more equitable future for children in low-resource settings.

Fellows will receive a salary of $60,000, shared office space at GRI, library access, and other benefits including comprehensive health insurance. The position also comes with over $15,000 in funds to conduct research and hire undergraduate student researchers.

To apply please submit your resume/curriculum vitae, cover letter, and a minimum of three references in the “Other Documents” field in the Applicant Documents Tab. You will be prompted to submit online the names and email addresses of three references who will be contacted by the system with instructions for how to submit a letter of reference. For full consideration, submit application materials by the review date.
