Founded in 1975, Literacy for Life is an independent 501©3 organization located in William and Mary’s School of Education, Williamsburg and at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center in Hampton. Literacy for Life’s mission is to empower adults by building foundational skills for success in life and work. Literacy for Life provides professional instruction and volunteer tutoring in reading, writing, math, English language, citizenship, computer skills, high school completion (GED and NEDP), health literacy, workplace readiness, and preparation for post-secondary programs.

Literacy for Life is seeking a part-time intake and assessment coordinator. As an independent 501©3 organization, Literacy for Life empowers adults by building foundational skills for success in life and work. The focus of Literacy for Life is to help individuals achieve a variety of personal goals. Personal goals can include obtaining a high school diploma, completing a workforce certification program, getting a better job, becoming a U.S. citizen, learning to read to their children, and being able to talk to their doctor. Services include one-to-one tutoring and classes, both virtual and in person, that address the basic skills of reading, writing, math and English language instruction. Upon entering the program, individuals complete a pre-assessment to determine their needs. They attend classes and/or are matched with a tutor. After a period of receiving instruction, participants take a post-assessment to measure educational gains. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills and be able to collaborate and communicate well with other staff members to ensure goals and responsibilities are met. Working with adult learners who face barriers such lack of English, transportation, childcare and work schedules requires a flexible, problem-solving attitude. This position is for 24 hours per week.

Job responsibilities:
- Oversee scheduling of intakes, pre-and post-assessments and practice tests
- Communicate patiently and effectively with students
- Ensure accurate and complete information is collected at intake
- Track all steps in the assessment process
- Determine the appropriate test for each learner
- Conduct practice tests prior to post-assessments
- Set up and proctor assessments
- Identify learners eligible for post-assessing
- Analyze accumulation of learner hours to determine if ready for testing
- Ensure accurate and complete results are shared with the Data Manager
- Complete goal reviews with each learner at post-assessment

Required Qualifications
- Ability to communicate with diverse adult learner and volunteer population essential.
- Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office and databases.
- Strong clerical, telephone and organizational skills for highly detailed work required.
- Ability to multi-task to interact effectively with others, work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Demonstrated dependability, punctuality, efficiency and confidentiality.

- Undergraduate degree strongly preferred.
