It is the objective of the William & Mary Police Department to reduce crime and the fear of crime and enhance the health of the university community. To instill the belief that solving problems is preferable to reacting to them. This is accomplished through the encouraging of attitudes and behaviors directed at reducing the threat of crime, as well as enhancing the sense of security. This will positively influence the quality of life in the community and develop an environment where crime cannot flourish. Producing these results requires the active involvement of all community members. Community policing and crime prevention is the guiding philosophy behind the shared responsibility of community protection and is the mechanism for the inclusion of community members in this shared responsibility. This shared responsibility for crime prevention coupled with the vigorous law enforcement, criminal investigations, apprehension, and prosecution of crimes that do occur provides a safe and healthy environment.
Position Summary
- Monitor Muscarelle Museum and grounds to ensure staff, students, visitors and artworks are safe.
- Perform and follow opening and closing policy and procedures as required.
- Make inspections of designated priority areas on a routine basis.
- Follows protocols for incident reporting as needed.
- Ensures all doors and windows are properly secured and all building conditions are normal including accessible emergency egress.
- Reports building concerns to Museum administration and Facilities Management.
- Conducts daily performance and facility logs in the absence of the Director of Security and communicates security concerns to Museum administration.
- Supervises front line security operations in the absence of the Director of Security.
- In tandem with Museum staff, helps to oversee vendors, contractors and equipment set-up and break-down as needed for, but not limited to, deliveries, catering, facility upkeep and special events.
- Reports facilities-related and unsafe campus conditions (including adverse weather) to supervisor and appropriate personnel and communicates recommended action to those departments.
- Reports all crimes in progress as well as suspicious/unruly individuals to William & Mary Police and notifies Museum staff as needed.
Conditions of Employment
- The person in this position will work under direct supervision.
- Routine tasks will be completed without direct supervision.
- Activities will be monitored by the direct supervisor and Museum administration.
- The person in this position will seek guidance for all activities that are beyond the normal activities. This position includes nights, weekends, and occasional holiday shifts.
- Must meet the physical conditions of the job.
- This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
- This position has been designated as essential and may require reporting to work when the university is officially closed.
- This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding.

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to learn various software and emergency response systems.
- Ability to acquire and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to work with staff at all levels.
- Must have excellent public contact skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment under stress.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous security, military, law enforcement, public safety, and/or museum experience.
- Experience working in higher education or academic/research environment
- Demonstrated knowledge of the operations of a university or cultural institutions encompassing museums, historical properties and collections.
