Unit Mission Statement
The Marine Operations Department is comprised of a dedicated group of professionals whose primary function is to provide safe access to the marine environment for all students, staff, faculty and other users and to support the needs of these users as they relate to vessels, field support services, instrument fabrication, equipment repair and servicing.
Position Summary
The Small Boat Assistant provides support to the fleet of vessels owned and operated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Reporting to the Marine Operations Officer, assists in daily activities related to vessel readiness for the fleet of trailerable and larger vessels operated by VIMS. This position ensures all trailerable boats are mission ready including but not limited to fueling, rigging, launching and retrieving. Assists in the daily accountability of all VIMS vessels and personnel when mobilized ensuring efficient operation and safe return, including vessels operating after working hours (early morning departures, weekend, and night operations). Ensures any damage or operating issues are addressed in a safe and expedient manner. Functions as both a small boat operator and as crew aboard larger vessels as needed and as the license allows. Assists the Marine Operations Officer and the Marine Safety Officer with consulting operators on proper small boat handling techniques.
The position will assist the Port Engineer and boat shop in the fabrication and installation of operation-specific equipment for the vessels. Actively participates in the maintenance of all trailers and trailerable boats. Will assist the lead marine mechanic with engine maintenance and troubleshooting as the need arises.

- Rigging and derigging a large and diverse range of scientific equipment to vessels. Providing adequate and up-to-date safety equipment for vessels as required by local and federal law, as well as best marine practices.
- Assist the Vessel Maintenance Department in the repair, service, and operating of marine engines, vessels, and trailers.
- Assisted in vessel routine inspections to include maintaining vessel to the standards as required by local and federal law, as well as best marine practices for the class of boat.
- Handles mooring lines while supporting vessel movements.
- Assists in cleaning, maintaining, and operation of vessel related equipment as appropriate to experience and training.
- Serve as temporary deck hand/mate aboard our research vessels.
- Serves as a small boat captain as needed.
- Responsible for fueling and mission ready status of small vessels fleet.
Conditions of Employment
This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
Ability to lift 50 lbs., ability to work long days (more than 12 hours) weekends and holidays. Ability to work in hot/confined spaces.
Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform all responsibilities while being exposed to inclement weather at sea for extended periods of time.

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Basic seamanship and general mechanical skills.
- Able to work on both land and sea.
- Broad and comprehensive knowledge of vessel operation and safety.
- Working knowledge of basic power tools in either a marine, automotive or construction setting.
- Working knowledge of commercial fishing techniques that support scientific field work.
- Proficiency in using personal computers, which includes experience with MS Office applications and basic email programs.
- Effective communication and interactive skills, with the ability to work with diverse groups.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining trailerable vessels, to include towing, trailering, fueling and navigating in Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.
- Experience working with basic power tools in either a marine, automotive or construction setting.
- Experience working in a group environment where cooperation was needed to complete tasks.
- Considerable experience in the commercial and marine science field collecting scientific data.
- Ability to operate forklifts, tractors, and other heavy equipment.
- Experience supporting a variety of marine related charters related to data collection, educational and outreach programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher in related field.
- Merchant Mariner Credential with 100 GT or greater issued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
- Certified in First Aid/CPR.
- Valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC) credential.
- Valid Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers credential.
- Ability to pass a USCG physical and pass USCG mandated drug screening and submit to random drug testing program.
- Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform all responsibilities while being exposed to inclement weather at sea for extended periods of time.
- Ability to work long days (more than 12 hours) weekends and holidays. Ability to work in hot/confined spaces.
- Experience working in commercial maritime settings is a plus.
