Position Summary
The Teaching and Learning Applications Specialist is responsible for supporting academic enterprise applications, primarily Blackboard, and also including other technologies such as Zoom, Panopto, PollEverywhere, and WordPress.
The position requires working expertly with William & Mary’s existing academic applications infrastructure, responding to support requests, and assisting with evaluation of other tools, products, and add-ons to support the academic mission.
The Teaching and Learning Applications Specialist develops strong relationships with stakeholders including users and IT staff and ensures that students and faculty can effectively use the learning management system and other applications.
Specific responsibilities include:
The position requires working expertly with William & Mary’s existing academic applications infrastructure, responding to support requests, and assisting with evaluation of other tools, products, and add-ons to support the academic mission.
The Teaching and Learning Applications Specialist develops strong relationships with stakeholders including users and IT staff and ensures that students and faculty can effectively use the learning management system and other applications.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Provide IT support for end users. Work with systems staff (or vendor) to resolve support issues and assist communications team when issues impact multiple users.
- Troubleshoot common and non-routine problems in teaching and learning applications. Close related tickets in a timely manner.
- Organize training, create Learning Management System (LMS) instructions, and train faculty and staff on the use of Blackboard Learn and other academic applications.
- Test academic applications after patches, scripts, and upgrades are put in place. Ensure that all features, plugins, and/or LTIs function smoothly.
Conditions of Employment
- This position is subject to additional hours that extend beyond the typical work hours, to include weekend or holiday work.
- May require occasional overnight travel as needed.
- Information Security: This position requires administrative access to the university’s information systems and/or sensitive university data. The incumbent is expected to be aware of and adhere to the information security policies of the university as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws, follow information security best practices applicable to their job area, and to pursue information security training and awareness opportunities when possible.

Required Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and substantive experience in information systems, educational technology, or closely related field.

COMPETENCIES:
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assist faculty in the effective use of the LMS, Wordpress, Wikis, Lecture Capture, and other academic technologies.
- Ability to learn, implement, master, and support new technologies and platforms for both large and small-scale changes in the academic applications environment.
- Strong presentation skills with the ability to explain relevant technologies to non-technical users. Effective presentation skills with a knowledge of technical support best practices in an academic environment.
- Understanding of web applications and student information systems, particularly regarding course and student records.
- Excellent consulting and written/oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities concurrently.
- Ability to engage in self-directed learning and adapt quickly to new information and challenges.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience with enterprise application administration and LMS support or related academic technology support.
- Experience working with vendor-supplied software applications in an academic environment.
- Experience with small or large application implementation projects from analysis to operational status.

- Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
COMPETENCIES:
- Familiarity with Banner or other similar ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems.
- Familiarity with IMS/SCORM objects and APIs.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of various operating and software environments.
- Knowledge of LMS capabilities and core functionalities including role definition and user management, course management, security and authentication, and institutional and branding settings.
- Ability to manage specialized tools in LMS platforms including calendars and announcements, Language Packs, plagiarism checking, and other plugins.
- Ability to support and expand the use of advanced features of LMS platforms including detailed knowledge of discussion board management, group tools management, Grade Center, and other tools.
EXPERIENCE:
- Significant experience working in various operating systems and software environments (to include Apple, Microsoft, or similar platforms and architectures).
- Significant experience in LMS administration in a distributed computing environment using Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle, Angel, Sakai, and other LMS platforms.
- Significant experience administering Wordpress, Wikispaces, and/or other distributed/collaborative writing platforms.
- Significant experience supporting capture, editing, management, storage, and streaming video and other multimedia learning objects.

$65,000 - $80,000 commensurate with experience
