William Paterson University invites application for the 12-month, full-time position of Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Retention Services within the division of Student Development in the Department of Academic Achievement. Reporting to the Executive Director of Academic Achievement, the Academic Advisor and Coordinator of Retention Services is responsible for holistic advising, guiding, and supporting a cohort of students through one-to-one advisement and group facilitation of success programs and Will. Power. The Advisement Center is a fast-paced, deadline-driven, student service-focused environment. In addition, they manage appropriate documentation, conduct outreach around early alert concerns, and maintain a student caseload using proper scheduling and note-keeping technologies. They are committed to a student-centered learning environment and the goals of developmental higher education.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to
  • Advise and manage a caseload of undergraduate advisees and work with them on critical concerns (as needed) around major selection and change, goal setting and transition, course sequencing, registration, and decision-making around course withdrawal and repeat.
  • Serves as a Will.Power.101/102 Facilitator for cohort(s) throughout the academic year; this includes advisement, program development, execution, case management, leading weekly group sessions, connecting students to needed resources, and other tasks to maintain the program. Assistance in completing success items such as mandatory programs, required university paperwork, and navigating systems.
  • Serves as the lead academic interventionist to mitigate academic concerns and at-risk behaviors and provide strategies for navigating academic transition.
  • Participates in and coordinates University level events and programs, including Major/Minor Fairs, Group Advisement, Registration events, Orientation, and other advisement–focused programs to support the success of undergraduate students.
  • Participates in weekly meetings/supervision around the Will.Power.101 program, professional development, and strategy building around first-year student issues.
  • Collaborates with Academic Success Services around directing students to appropriate academic support services, connecting students to probation recovery programs, and responding to early alerts impacting course sequencing.
  • Advise transfer and readmit students and assist in the onboarding and transition to university life.
  • Assists with summer and intercession academic programs and experiences; assists in directing students towards appropriate transition experiences.
  • Serves as a liaison for students in their caseload and collaborating offices to provide information and assistance as needed.
  • Assist in troubleshooting billing, verification, and financial aid concerns.
  • Develop and implement cohort and thematic programs to aid retention and transitional acclimation.
  • Assists in longitudinal tracking; reports on outcomes, key performance indicators, program effectiveness, and results, including annual and other reporting requirements.
  • Assist families with college processes, academic concerns, and transition.
  • Advise students on a walk-in basis related to college policies and curriculum and student needs.
  • Establishes and maintains a cooperative and collaborative working relationship with the University community, faculty, and administrators.
  • Attendance at and participation in evening and weekend activities as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.
  • Hybrid work may be available dependent upon institutional need.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university is required; Counseling, Social Work, or related discipline is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of full-time professional experience in academic advisement or cohort management in a Higher Education setting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in higher education with diverse and at-risk populations, including first-generation college students and families, is required.
  • Programmatic experience with demonstrated retention outcomes is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated cohort management, outreach, and assessment skills are required.
  • Experience using Banner Student Information System, Workday, and Navigate is preferred.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed is required.
  • Teaching a First-Year success course is strongly preferred.
