William Paterson University invites open rank applications for the 10-month position of Faculty / Coordinator of Jazz Studies in the Department of Music in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. This is a fulltime-tenure track or fulltime non-tenure track (Instructor) position, with full benefits, rank dependent on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. Start date is August 2025.
Reporting to the Music Department Chair, the Coordinator of Jazz Studies faculty position in the Department of Music supports the Bachelor of Music and the Master of Music program in Jazz Studies.
The position coordinates the Jazz Studies Program, overseeing program administration, supervising administrative personnel, recruiting, fund raising, providing curricular and academic oversight, supporting student performances of all types, producing professional concerts, and teaching classes in the program.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :
- Teaching courses in the jazz studies program, which may include classes in jazz improvisation, pedagogy, capstone research and scholarship, history, and other areas as needed and as appropriate to the expertise of the incumbent.
- Assigning applied lessons, creating student ensemble personnel and schedules, resolving schedule conflicts; coordinating, supervising, and participating in end-of-semester performance juries.
- Coordinating with jazz program faculty on students' academic and musical progress, advising students, coordinating senior recital performances, approving recital programs and repertoire, attending recitals, working with the Registrar to facilitate timely graduation of seniors.
- Recruiting students, giving tours, meeting with visiting students and their families, coordinating with Music Admissions Office on inquiries, working with Publications Office on recruitment and advertising materials, creating scholarship packages.
- Working with Music Admissions office supervising and implementing admissions procedures, collecting audition materials, auditioning applicants, creating letters, contacting admitted students.
- Working with the Public Relations office on current jazz student and faculty publicity; conducting personal interviews on various media, coordinating outreach.
- Supervising curricular aspects of the program in partnership with the jazz faculty, including new courses, revamping of existing courses, and ongoing revisions to jazz studies curriculum; participating in assessment of the program.
- Supervising functions of administrative staff and graduate assistants as appropriate.
- Working in partnership with the Chair on jazz adjunct employment, payroll, creation of teaching schedules, grading, course content and expectations.
- Working with the Chair on budgetary decisions regarding functions of the Jazz Studies Program.
- Working with Graduate Program Director on aspects of the Jazz Studies track of the Master of Music.
- Coordinating and facilitating artistic decisions regarding the contracting of performing artists for guest lectures, guest performers with student ensembles, and the Jazz Room concert series; producing student performances.
- Serving on departmental, college and university committees.
- Participating in program assessment.
