Purpose of Department:
The Office of Public Safety’s mission is to create and maintain a climate of security at William Peace University. A safe climate is necessary to enable the university to attract top students from around the world. It is also important to provide a safe and secure work and study environment that is free from concerns about crime and is conducive to the pursuit of a quality education. The public safety programs that are now in place were designed and implemented with this philosophy in mind.
Summary of Position:
WPU seeks applicants to be available for duty as needed to cover planned and unplanned absences, emergency situations, and periods when additional staffing is required. Selected candidates will be contacted on an as needed basis throughout the year for various shifts. This position reports directly to the Director and the Assistant Director of Public Safety and provides general public safety services to the University community. This position is non-exempt (paid hourly) and the selected candidates must be able to satisfactorily clear a background check. Any hours worked on 2nd or 3rd shift will earn an additional 10% shift differential on top of base pay.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to enforcement of the University’s rules and policies; preventing and suppressing crime; protecting life and property; patrolling assigned areas on foot to ensure personnel, building, and equipment is secure; maintaining patrol logs, recording occurrences, and completing necessary paperwork; informing and warning violators of rule infractions such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles; and working with local law enforcement agencies. Duties also may require use of computers to input and retrieve data. The Officer is expected to comply with the University’s and the Department’s rules, regulations, and policies; perform duties independently, utilize proper judgment, and maintain a high degree of professionalism.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum three years of experience in public safety
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license
- Previous experience working with diverse populations
- Ability to maintain professionalism
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a Police Officer
- Experience in a public safety position in a higher education setting
Hours per week:
up to 29 based on dept needs
