What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Director of Alumni Fund Leadership Giving position at Williams College?
Join a passionate fundraising team as our Associate Director for Alumni Fund Leadership Giving, a pivotal role expanding the philanthropic impact of generations of alumni. Nearly 75% of Alumni Fund dollars come from leadership donors—and we see a unique opportunity to grow that number through both a new program element and further refinement of existing strategies.
As the strategic architect of a new peer-to-peer leadership volunteer agent structure you will partner across the Development and Alumni Engagement teams to recruit, train, and support a diverse cohort of volunteer solicitors. Your leadership will shape a sustainable, high-impact volunteer model that broadens and diversifies the number of leadership donors making gifts between $2,500-$25,000.
You’ll also be a key partner to Development Officers, helping ensure their leadership asks ($25,000–$250,000) are well-timed, well-executed, and well-stewarded. Within the Alumni Engagement team, Class Managers will count on you to keep information flowing clearly and consistently among staff and volunteers, and to secure challenge funds that drive successful microcampaigns and class-based annual giving efforts.
In collaboration with the Director of Women’s Leadership Giving, you’ll lead efforts to broaden and diversify the leadership donor pool through thoughtful analysis, strategy, and execution.
We’re seeking a seasoned fundraising professional who thrives in cross-functional environments, brings a deep commitment to inclusion and belonging, and is passionate about the transformative power of philanthropy. If you’re ready to build on tradition while innovating for the future, we want to hear from you.
Responsibilities:
As the Associate Director for Alumni Fund Leadership Giving, you will be the hub of leadership giving for the college. While many staff and volunteers will be your frontline, you will be orchestrating the whole of the effort and ensuring they all have what they need for the team to meet aspirational fundraising goals.
This full-time, year-round position is eligible for Williams College’s robust benefits package designed to support you in your work and overall health and wellness. A hybrid work arrangement (2 days remote/week) is available following an initial training and orientation period fully in-person and on campus.

- The Purple Mountain Association. You will ensure ~10% of each class’s donors receive a personalized leadership ask from a staff member or a peer. Identify new leadership prospects by analyzing giving and engagement behavior. In collaboration with Development colleagues, provide strategic leadership of AF prospects in gift officer portfolios, ensuring each prospect has an ambitious but achievable ask and strategy in place. Provide the strategic leadership of the AF prospect pool to help DOs and SDOs identify and secure challenge funds for microcampaigns. Carry out baseline stewardship for all Alumni Fund leadership donors of at least $2,500/year, and ensure elevated stewardship is provided for donors making gifts of $25,000 and higher.
- Leadership Agent Volunteer Program. This is an exciting opportunity to build something new for Williams on top of a generations-strong foundational peer-to-peer volunteer agent structure. You will partner with both Alumni Engagement and Development colleagues to identify and recruit new volunteer leadership agents across all classes. Using existing volunteer training structures and building new ones, provide a dedicated cohort of volunteers ongoing and ample opportunities to receive appropriate training to engage and ask peers and handle challenging questions and situations and ensure they’re properly onboarded, supported, and retained.
- Diversification of Alumni Fund leadership donors. Collaborate with Prospect Management and Research colleagues to conduct regular analysis of the leadership donor and prospect pool, with an aim of proportional representation at each level of the leadership pyramid from all solicitable alumni populations. Where gaps exist among cohorts within the leadership donor pool, develop collaborative strategies and initiatives to close those gaps and broaden and diversify the donor pool.
- Bachelor’s plus at least 5 years relevant experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Previous experience managing volunteers is required
- Previous frontline gift officer experience is required
