Summary : Under the supervision of store management, processes customer purchases and returns of general merchandise (other than structural materials). Full-time cashiers are required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week including weekend hours. Part-time cashiers can work up to 28 hours per week, including evening hours and weekends.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities to include but not limited to :
- Accurately prepares daily cash drawer with adequate amounts of each monetary denomination, totaling an amount predetermined by management.
- Processes customer purchases including cash, check, credit card, and gift card transactions.
- Processes charges to in-house charge accounts, as well as credits to these accounts due to merchandise returns.
- Verifies the identity of customers using in-house charge accounts for purchases.
- Verifies the identity of customers paying for purchases via check.
- Processes return merchandise transactions including cash, check, credit card, and gift card transactions.
- Processes payments on account for Williams Lumber in-house charge accounts.
- Greet customers courteously when they arrive at the register, including asking if they’ve found everything needed.
- Provide customer service to customers.
- Answer customer questions, or direct them to appropriate personnel for answers to questions.
- Answer telephone when the receptionist is away from his / her work station.
- Gather shopping carts from parking lot and bring inside store.
- Ensure shopping baskets are available for use and stacked in an orderly fashion.
- Cleaning and straightening of the cash register area, including stocking impulse items.
- May be assigned to other areas of the store to assist in setting up displays, customer service, stocking etc.
- Notifies management of large cash accumulation in the register.
- Processes deposits on special orders according to procedure.
- Keeps aware of advertisements and sale items.
- Utilizes computer system to find SKU’s for items being purchased.
- Delivers returned merchandise to appropriate departments.
- Responsible for closing out cash drawer at the end of each shift.
As with all other jobs other duties may be assigned. Management reserves the right to reassign an individual in this position to another position in the interest of efficient personnel utilization.

Education and / or Experience :
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma; or twelve months of related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills :
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and comprehend correspondence and memos. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, associates and venders.
Mathematical Skills :
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, and percents. Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry. Ability to count back change to a customer.
Reasoning Ability :
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardizations exist.
