Overview
The Registered Dietitian (RD) provides medical nutrition therapy services including nutrition education, assessment, reassessment, intervention, diagnosis, monitoring and condition-specific nutrition care for patients using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) Standards of Practice in Nutrition Care and Standards of Professional Performance for Registered Dietitians. The RD will abide by the Code of Ethics for the Nutrition and Dietetics Profession as provided by the AND. The RD initiates and participates in quality improvement programs and supports institutional accreditation. The RD provides training and mentorship for Dietetic Interns as needed and serves as a supporting role in community events as requested. Provide Outpatient Nutrition Counseling services through scheduling, billing, documentation, and communication with providers in accordance with coding and billing requirements and professional obligation.

What you will do
- Assess, diagnose, implement, and evaluate treatments and provide appropriate, individualized plan of care based on nutrition assessment and needs of the patient while following departmental policy and guidelines. Set patient focused, measurable goals and follow up appropriately. Consistently demonstrate evidence-based competency in the physical, psychosocial, and cultural assessment of the patient and adapt care to meet the individual patient’s emotional, education, and age-specific needs.
- Actively keep knowledge updated and incorporate best practice and make changes in suggested care plans per industry guidelines, etc. Demonstrate knowledge and competency that reflects current Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) practices. Stay abreast of and follow guidelines related to accreditation, patient safety, etc. when caring for patients.
- Support the MD and clinical staff in the provision of patient care to include collaboration with physicians to provide for the specialized needs of the patient. Recognize and respond to variances in patient care/condition, to include notification of the Physician and team of factors that will affect their care. Ensure that information shared with physician is in a timely and accurate manner for coordination of care.
- Maintain up to date patient documentation without frequent supervision. Submit documentation of patient care information and perform timely billing so the department can be paid for the services provided in appropriate time frame.
- Deliver excellent service to patients/families and other customers by providing assistance with their overall needs. This includes linking patients with appropriate resources in the community, providing service to other customers that may be assigned to another co-worker, etc. Stay abreast of current community and RHS resources that patients may be referred to for assistance with their needs.
- Build trusting collaborative relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs. Attend IPOC care meetings as appropriate. Actively participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
- Initiate and/or participate in Quality Assurance/Process Improvement processes focused on improved processes, patient safety or satisfaction
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelors Degree, Dietetics (Required)
Experience
- 1 year Healthcare Nutrition/Dietetics (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Dietician (RD) - Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) (Required)
- Food Handlers Card (FH) - VA State - ANSI-approved Food Handlers certificate program (only required for RDs in inpatient settings) within 30 Days(Required)
- Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) (Preferred)
- Certified Nutrition Support Dietitian (CNSD) (Preferred)
