Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing leadership and managing the athletic program at an assigned school. Position trains and mentors coaches assigned to the school and assists in their supervision. Position schedules and coordinates athletic events, practices, and related activities ensuring the effective utilization of staff and resources, and assists administration in the development and maintenance of a wholesome and balanced athletic program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operational personnel, facilities, transportation, officials, promotions, and equipment.
  • Monitors conditions of field and grounds.
  • Provides supervision and crowd control for home and away athletic events as appropriate.
  • Provides orientation of athletic staff regarding policies and procedures governing the athletic program including district, regional, and state regulations.
  • Assists in recommending potential athletic staff members.
  • Ensures that athletic coaches and staff comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act and monitors the working hours of the athletic coaches and staff.
  • Maintains complete records on the athletic program including eligibility lists, insurance lists, equipment inventories, awards, rosters, finances, physicals, event records, etc., and prepares and submits reports required by the principal, superintendent of schools, the State Department of Education, and the Virginia High School League.
  • Administers the finances of the athletic programs for the school including preparing an annual budget, supervising the purchase and maintenance of athletic equipment, authorizing and approving purchase orders, and ensures athletic event receipts are deposited.
  • Acts as liaison between principal and coaching staff.
  • Serves as a liaison between coaches and parents.
  • Attends district, regional, and state athletic meetings as appropriate.
  • Attends continued educational opportunities for the profession (such as leadership training classes from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association).
  • Initiates contact with each middle school’s athletic director to coordinate athletic activities offered at the high schools and middle schools.
  • Acts as liaison between the athletic staff and the athletic booster club.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Must possess the minimum qualifications for becoming a teacher, which includes eligibility for a Virginia Teaching License. Master’s degree in a related field or Certified Athletic Administrator, preferred.
  • Possess some experience as a coach at the secondary school or college level.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the regulations governing high school athletic programs.
  • Possess the ability to organize and manage a high school athletic program and supervise/train coaching staff.
  • Possess the ability to maintain accurate records and prepare related reports.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff members, and the public.
  • Demonstrate considerable knowledge and experience in budgeting and purchasing.
  • Possess leadership abilities and communication skills necessary to lead and work cooperatively with athletes, coaches, students, school administrators, staff, parents, and the community.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
