Assistant Department Manager - Grocery
Location: Williamson Street, Madison, WI
Status: Salaried exempt, non-represented
Supervision: Supervisory responsibility for Grocery department staff

About the Role: To ensure the highest level of service possible to Willy Street Co-op’s internal and external customers. To assist the Department Manager in all operations, including scheduling, budgeting, inventory, training, and staffing. To provide effective back up to the Department Manager by assuming responsibility in their absence.

What You’ll Do: You will partner with the Department Manager to facilitate and oversee all aspects of the department and its operations. You will assist the Manager in developing and implementing strategies related to profitability, expense control, inventory control, buying and merchandising, and regulatory compliance. In addition, you’ll be involved in the following:
- Greet and offer assistance to customers
- Treat people fairly, consistently and with respect
- Know product locations in order to assist customers in finding what they need throughout the store
- Ensure that the department is kept attractive and clean
- Assist with the daily operations of the department, including analyzing workflow, establishing priorities, developing standards and setting deadlines
- Collaborate with the department manager to develop and uphold performance standards for all department staff
- Assist in training, supervising, coaching and evaluating the department’s team
- Assist in scheduling staff according to weekly labor budget and quarterly cost of labor; arrange for coverage of vacant shifts and fill in as needed.
- Work with the department manager to achieve sales, margin and labor goals
- Assist in monitoring and maintaining department supplies
- Abide by all co-op policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and other company documents
- Participate in required training and meetings
- Perform all other duties as assigned by your supervisor
What You Bring: This role requires the following education, experience, skills and abilities:
- Prior experience directly supervising other staff
- Previous experience in a retail department
- A positive attitude and collaborative spirit
- Outstanding customer service skills
- Willingness to be open, to learn and take on new responsibilities
- Regular, predictable attendance
- Effective communication skills in English
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions
- Demonstrated accuracy and thoroughness

Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Standing, walking, bending, and reaching

- Specific vision ability: close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and adjust to focus
- Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds at times
Work Environment: Office setting with enclosed offices, cubicles and some meeting spaces. Moderate temperatures with noise including but not limited to computers, paging, phones, human voices, file cabinets, printers and key card beep.
OR
Fast paced retail environment with food service equipment and coolers and in cold/hot working conditions (i.e. cooler or near heated surfaces). Other high to moderate noise including but not limited to computers, cash registers, paging, telephones, music and human voices. Office setting with enclosed offices, cubicles and meeting spaces. Moderate temperatures with noise including but not limited to computers, paging, phones, human voices, file cabinets, printers and key card beep.
