GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION –
Basic Functions:
This position is a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who functions under the supervision of the certified school nurse for health room responsibilities.
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
PA Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
Recent nursing experience, within one year of application,
Previous experience providing LPN services to students in a K-12 school environment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
This position requires the ability to effectively follow oral and written instructions, to work independently (when appropriate), to handle emergency situations and to adjust to changes in the educational environment. This position requires the ability to communicate with employees at of all levels and maintain a positive attitude with all employees, parents, students, and other individuals utilizing District buildings. This position requires the ability to effectively utilize student information management systems, Microsoft Word, and other district-programs to maintain student health information in accordance with established policies and procedures.
This position requires the ability to apply those skills within the scope of LPN practice.
This position requires the ability to maintain the confidentiality of information at all times.
This position requires a current CPR/First Aid training (valid card must be maintained on file at all times).
This position requires the ability to provide physical assistance as necessary.
Authority & Responsibilities:

- Identifies self as a Health Room Technician and provides name. (E)
- Works under the direction of the school nurse to implement portions of the school health program in one or more schools. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following (E):
- Completes growth screening if assigned by the school nurse.
- Performs head checks, re-checks, and re-admission for head lice as assigned.
- Administers medication and/or treatments to children with chronic illnesses according to physician’s orders and as assigned by the school nurse.
- Refers phone calls to the school nurse and notifies the school nurse of significant information. Refers staff concerns, parent calls, etc., to the school nurse.
- Prepares year-end mailings, including but not limited to: 9th grade exam forms, asthma forms, medication forms, and hypersensitivity forms, as assigned.
- Maintains a daily log and updates student health records on the computer system.
- Performs nursing procedures with the scope of LPN practice (catheterizations, tube feedings, and other nursing treatments/procedures).
- Distributes, records and files records, permission slips, and other nursing forms under the direction of the school nurse.
- Maintains a neat and orderly health suite, replenishing supplies daily or as needed. (E)
- Maintains confidentiality at all times. (E)
- Completes child abuse reporting form CY47 as mandated by law. Copies of CY47 should be left with the school nurse and further documentation should be made after consult with the school nurse (HRTs are mandated reporters). Building principals should be informed when a CY47 has been completed.
- Requires the ability to provide physical assistance when necessary; able to move throughout the building (all floors) and school grounds as necessary. (E)
- Performs other related functions as directed by the School Nurse or his/her designee.
Physical Requirements:
Able to exert, at a minimum, up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Auditory and Visual Requirements:
Within normal ranges with or without correction.
Equipment Used:
Office equipment such as computers, fax machines, telephones, copiers, etc.
Equipment utilized in providing health services (thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, etc.)
Medications utilized to provide health services.
Scope of Practice Limitations:
The following duties may NOT be assigned to or undertaken by the HRT:
- Management or completion of referral forms related to suicide attempts, CARE teams or psychological referrals, chart related information on health records, IST or MDE forms;
- Telephone inquiries from physicians for information about students. Telephone inquiries regarding medication orders ARE
- Case management;
- Initiate or complete referrals—No child should have any referral completed unless requested by the certified school nurse;
- Counsel students or offer advice to students, parents or staff beyond the protocols of the district;
- Complete state forms;
- File anything that the HRT is not directed to file;
- Perform screenings unless specifically instructed by the school nurse;
- Sign the school nurse’s name or initials;
- Use the oto/ophthalmologic scope;
- Enter any information or file anything in the health record without the consent of the school nurse;
- Provide information to parents regarding health issues;
- Give medical advice to parents-Parents must be referred to their own primary physician.
