The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for Temporary Summer Work (5TH Marking Period), Intervention Specialist. Work schedule is June 9 through June 27, 2025 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, Monday - Friday.  Location is Williamsport Area Middle School, subject to change as determined by the Superintendent or his/her designee.  Wages are as per the collective bargaining agreement. Qualifications include a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent job experience working with/mentoring/counseling at-risk and multicultural student populations. Previous experience in conflict resolution and instructing students by modeling desirable behaviors and skills is required. Safety-care QBS certification required. Qualifications for this position shall be based upon applicable verified work experience, verified educational/training/credentials, applicable testing results and the District’s defined qualifications for the position. Qualifications for this position are defined solely by the District, including for internal candidates, an employee’s work attendance, disciplinary history, credentials and other job specific qualifications.

Basic Functions:

This position is primarily responsible for assisting the teacher and school staff in providing support services associated with at-risk students and their families.  The individual in this position will be familiar with the needs of students from various cultures and backgrounds, including dysfunctional families.  He/she will be familiar with and comfortable using anger management and conflict resolution procedures.  He/she will be comfortable instructing students by modeling desirable behaviors and skills.  He/she will possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

 

Education & Experience:

This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent job experience working with/ mentoring/ counseling at-risk and multicultural student populations.  Previous experience in conflict resolution and instructing students by modeling desirable behaviors and skills is required. Safety-Care QBS Certification required.   

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

This position requires demonstrated patience and the ability to relate to students, parents, and staff members of all cultural backgrounds and experiences.  Must have the demonstrated ability to deal with emergency situations, remain calm and diffuse potentially explosive behavior and situations, utilizing the appropriate anger management and conflict resolution skills.  Must demonstrate the ability and willingness to conduct home visits.

 

This position requires the physical ability to provide assistance using non-violent, crisis intervention procedures when controlling or preventing potentially violent situations. 

 

This position requires a valid PA driver’s license, with appropriate insurance coverage limits, and reliable transportation.

 

Authority & Responsibilities:

[(E) Designates Essential Functions] 

  1. Works with building principals, teachers, parents, special education staff and/or student services staff to teach and model pro-social, desirable behavior and to modify students’ unacceptable or disruptive behavior. (E) 
  1. Collaborates with building principals, school staff, students and student families in forming positive relationships and modifying attitudes. (E) 
  1. Encourages students (primary role) in all settings and under all conditions, including school, home and recreational settings, courts, and others. (E)
  1. Conducts home visits with district support to address behavior and/or school related issues. (E) 
  1. Transports students when appropriate and deemed necessary. (E) 
  1. Acts as a facilitator between at-risk families and school personnel to improve students’ academic adjustments. (E) 
  1. Makes telephone/home contacts regarding student attendance issues. 
  1. Checks in/monitoring of students(s) to include attendance, grades and/or suspension. 
  1. Participates in conflict resolution conferences with peer mediators, advisers and other school personnel. (E) 
  1. Monitors the school climate and is prepared to diffuse tense, disruptive or potentially violent situations, utilizing appropriate anger management and/or conflict resolution skills. (E) 
  1. Communicates effectively (orally and in writing) with administrators, staff, students and the public. (E) 
  1. Is able to speak and write in a clear and concise manner. (E) 
  1. Operates office equipment, including but not limited to, fax machine, copiers, computers, telephones, intercom systems, etc. (E) 
  1. Maintains confidentiality of all business related information. (E) 
  1. Performs other related functions as directed by the Director of Student Services, Director of Special Education, building principal and/or designee. (E) 
  1. Requires 20 hours of professional development per year. (E)

 

Physical Requirements:

VERY HEAVY- Exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

 

This position may involve the controlling of others—seizing, holding, controlling and/or otherwise subduing violent, assaultive or physically threatening persons to defend self or prevent injury.  Body strength and agility of all four limbs is required.

 

Auditory and Visual Requirements:

Within normal ranges with or without correction.

 

Equipment Used:

Office equipment such as computers, fax machines, telephones, copiers, intercom systems, etc.
