Clinical Research Coordinator - Glaucoma Research
Primary Function:
The Clinical Research Coordinator coordinates and helps facilitate all aspects of the Glaucoma Research-based clinical trials. Additionally, this position demonstrates expertise in ophthalmic imaging techniques utilized to obtain images for research studies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides moderate to advanced range of coordination of Research studies conducted at the Medical Center.
- Assists with recruitment, enrollment, grant submissions, research data collection, and study coordination activities.
- Manages all aspects of sponsored clinical trials, including obtaining informed patient consents, patient screenings, enrolling/monitoring study patients in an outpatient setting, and ensuring protocol compliance.
- Performs intra-operative monitoring and serves as a liaison with internal and external funding agencies.
- Ensures the accurate execution of research protocols in accordance with Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA, and required obligations to patient/subject Principal Investigator, Research Tear and sponsors.
- Interfaces directly with patients/subjects and Principal investigator in support of the clinical trials, if applicable.
- Formulates relationships with relevant parties at the Medical Center, including: Research Nurses, Research Pharmacists, Program Managers, Medical Technicians, Clinical Information Systems, and regulatory services.
- Acquires ophthalmic images from humans and animals utilizing specialized equipment, including: ocular fundus imaging systems (fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green (ICG)), optical coherence tomography (OCT), corneal topography, specular microscopy, ultrasound and photo slit lamp biomicroscope.
- Acquires images of medical phenomena of eyes to document diseases, surgeries, treatments, and congenital problems.
- Maintains clean environment for imaging.
- Educates patients/subjects regarding administration of medications, as well as pre- or post-procedural instructions, as directed by the ophthalmologist/Principal Investigator.
- Recognizes problems or malfunctions of photographic, diagnostic, and related equipment. Provides basic diagnostic repairs of equipment. Notifies Principal Investigator to need for service or new equipment.
- Assists with image-archiving and storage. Manages, duplicates, and escalates any problems or concerns with image capture.
- Responsible for preparing materials, as requested, for audio-visual presentations, publications, lectures, and exhibits.
- Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents. Ensures there are adequate levels on hand. Works with supervisor to place orders in a timely manner. Receives supply orders, and confirms accuracy of delivery.
- Responsible for training and education of peers in ophthalmic imaging techniques and protocols, as instructed by supervisor.
- Prepares periodic reports of manual operation on utilizing imaging techniques, as instructed.
- Ensures patient safety is maintained at all times.
- Strives to maintain the confidentiality of patients and families/significant other(s).
- Respects and protects the patients' rights to confidentiality and privacy, and discloses information only for professional purposes which are in the patients' best interest with full consideration of their legal rights.
- Functions as an effective team member, forming and maintaining effective working relationships with peers and management.

Educational requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required
Licensure:
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification preferred
Experience:
- At least 2 years of relevant experience required
- Previous research-related experience preferred
- One year of experience as an ophthalmic photographer required. Retinal experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in diagnostic testing required

Work Environment:
Works in a clean, well-lit, ventilated work area. Exposed to biological, chemical, and environmental elements, including infectious waste. Work environment may be noisy and have many interruptions, requiring frequent re-evaluation of priorities.
Physical Requirements:
Walking and standing; stooping, bending, balancing and sitting. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
