Learn to Swim Instructor Job Summary
The Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching and ensuring the safety of swimming to participants of all ages and skill levels.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Create and use swim lesson plans for all classes
- Effectively instruct aquatic class participants for the skill levels assigned
- Supervise the instructional aide assigned to you
- Keep accurate records including but not exclusive to attendance, progress of participants, class activities, and course record sheets
- Use assigned pool space effectively and efficiently
- Begin and end classes on time
- Provide excellent customer service following Wilmette Park District guidelines at all times
- Perform other related duties as assigned based on agency needs
- Actively contribute to the Park Districts’ sustainability goals
SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Actively support the safety program that will effectively control and reduce accidents
- Obey all Park District and departmental safety rules, regulations, and procedures established by the Wilmette Park District safety program that are pertinent to the activities conducted at the facility and property
- Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices, or conditions to the immediate supervisor
- Attend and participate in required safety training
- Review all accident and incident reports that occur under the area of responsibility and send them to the Human Resources/Risk Management division
- Responsible for administering minor first aid if needed
- Monitor the learn/play environment for safety hazards
- Maintain the safety of campers at all times, including pool, bus, and field trips
Required Skills/Abilities (Technology, Mathematical, Language):
- Knowledge of swimming skills is required
- Knowledge of organizing and conducting swimming lessons
- Must be able to work with the public and other employees in a professional manner

Education and/or Experience:
- Must be at least 15 years of age
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
- Frequently required to stand, walk, swim, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, push, pull, carry and repeatedly stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Occasionally required to sit and climb or balance and move and lift 100 pounds
- Regularly lift and move up to 25 pounds
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
Availability:
- Must commit to at least two full, 2 weekdays (M-TH) lesson sessions and 8 weekend day lessons
- Teaching hours: Monday -Thursday 930a – 130p; Saturday and Sunday 930a – 12p required for Group Lessons
- Per request for Private Lessons
Required Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
- Red Cross Child/Infant CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (Employer-Provided Training)
